Re: Any F13 owners collected their cars yet? Share impressions please!

Thanks to wobble,

Finally found the webby... Was thinking of getting either the 640i or 650i... but my SE is "strongly" encouraging me to go for the 640i cab which have bigger discount...

Re: Any F13 owners collected their cars yet? Share impressions please!

Bro James, how much off sticker price are they willing to go? What about the coupe? Any luck pressing them for a discount for that? Dun be shy - PML trying hard to end year on orgasm. Anyhow also they are willing to do - BDSM, MILF - as long can do, they will (I think) hahahaha

Re: Any F13 owners collected their cars yet? Share impressions please!

hahaha... i hope my SE is reading this page... anyway will hope he give me the bestest price lah... since they already TOP this yr.. They should anyhow sell...

But now im abit in a fix.. cant really decide whether to go for 640i or 650i... Although the SE keeps dangling carrot for the 640 cab....

I reproduce a review I wrote for your consideration - but, mind you, it's a bit of a wordy read hor:

This is my field report on the recent test drives I took on the newly launched BMW 2011/2012 F13 6-series coupes (640i & 650i). I will of course follow this up with a full in-depth write up on my experience on my incoming F13, but that's only due 1st quarter next year, so I guess this will have to do for now...

Preamble: Test driving the F12 650i convertible

I previously test drove the convertible version of this car (the F12) earlier this year at its launch sometime back in May, and while this was arguably a far more attractive iteration than the previous rendition (what with its infamous Bangle (bungled?) bottom and those sad, droopy, hound-dog eyes), I have to confess: the drive didn’t take my breath away metaphorically as much as the dropped top & the wind in my face threatened to do so my toupee. OK, so I kid. I don’t wear a toupee… not yet anyway.

Now, I’m no Jeremy Clarkson … I’m not even James ‘Captain Slow’ May. For crying out loud, when the word “drifting” is applied in my context, it would mean “in and out of sleep” as opposed to “round and round a track, gobbling up rubber as it went”. So no, it wasn’t any minutiae in the supposedly woolly feel of the electrically assisted steering that I didn’t like.

Nor was it the artificially jerky lane changes in the form of the Integral Active Steering at slow speeds (speaking about that, the car was decidedly jumpy at taking a sweeping corner at 110km/h as well – might have something to do with the loss of the car’s roof resulting in a corresponding loss of torsional rigidity in a convertible).

Neither was it the slightly alarming way the fuel tank needle drained toward the letter “E” during our extended test drive around Singapore. I mean, that’s to be expected of a big, thirsty, unquenchable Twin Turbo’ed V8 with 407 horses in the stable bursting to be let out and let loose.

No, it wasn’t all or any of the above that I didn’t like about the F12. It was simply the fact that I don’t like convertibles. I think convertibles are superfluous, unnecessary and impractical in our hot, humid climate. I mean, honestly, how many of us would drive around town without the air-conditioning switched on?

I think the rag top cannot keep road noise out of the cabin anywhere as well as a coupe with real insulation can. And I think at $430,800 (before options, mind you), it is way too much money to pay for a car that doesn’t even have a roof.

Of course, the niggly other bits I just mentioned earlier didn’t contribute anything to helping me change my admittedly biased view.

Ah, but I know what the true purpose of test driving the F12 convertible was, you see. I was actually on the trail of its more pragmatic sibling, the F13 coupe. The convertible, therefore, was just quarry to prepare me for the real hunt. The one that really mattered.

So, nearly 5 months later, when the coupe was finally sighted on 21 October, I jumped at the opportunity and landed a pair of test drives with the all new, BMW 2011/2012 F13 640i and 650i coupes.

Before I proceed with the write up, I should explain how I ended up with the test drive cars for as long as I did. As I presently own an F02 from PML, I got enrolled into the "7 privileges plus program (7PP+)".

Basically, the 7PP+ offers the F02 owners certain lifestyle privileges like a free yacht cruise with family & friends once a year, for 3 years, exclusive invitations to golf games (which I never go, since I don't know how to golf!), and free use of a chauffeur (but you have to use your own F02) twice a year - for the 1st 3 years of ownership. But the favourite bit of the 7PP+ for me is where I could specify certain cars to be brought home for an 'extended test drive'. Essentially, I reckon that's just a program PML designed to bait us and hook us into future purchases - but, it's a great way to get to know a potential future purchase. It sure beats a 10 minute drive around the block during a typical test drive!

The F13 test drives:

Much of what I was concerned about in the convertible no longer applied on testing the coupe version of the 650i. For one thing, there was a roof over my head, and the air-conditioning was turned on.

For another, the presence of a roof conferred not only a subjective reassurance of security, but objectively, the car felt way firmer & more planted during corners – so much so that the same sweeping corner in question was accomplished with far greater aplomb (and far fewer sweaty palm grip stains on the steering wheel) in the coupe than what I could have managed in the convertible.

However, the fuel gauge needle still had this inescapable fixation toward the letter “E”, and always seemed to be in an inexplicable, desperate hurry to get there. And let’s be honest, the legal speed limit on this small island of mine is 90km/h, and on the PLUS North South stairway to heaven, I meant, highway is (officially anyway) 110km/h – so, unless I’m in a similarly desperate hurry to lose my licence, a lot of that top end speed and V8 rumble would be lost to me.

So, as much as I liked the feel of a roof over my head & the galloping thunder of 407 metal hooves on the bitumen, I couldn’t quite justify plonking $400,800 (again, without options) for a car that would take me to the cleaners at the petrol pump.

That leaves me with the 640i coupe.

The drive was just as engaging as her bigger brother’s. Roof & the associated security: check. Torsional rigidity and road gripping stability at high speed & high speed corners: check. Comfort at cruising speed, coddling ride on adjustable dampers: of course.

Honestly, at real-world driving conditions, my non-race bred reflexes and my non-track honed instincts can NOT distinguish the difference between 600Nm and 450Nm of torque, nor could I discern with absolute certainty the nuances between 407 and (only) 320 mechanical equines at the shove. 4.9s vs. 5.4s from 0 – 100km/h? Both seem pretty fast to me. 250km/h capped speed – I would have lost my licence at 140km/h earlier anyway.

However, my back pocket could certainly appreciate the difference in how the 640i figuratively sips at the fuel pump, when compared to the 650i’s insatiable appetite for the black gold. And, at $355,800 (once more, without options), it was a relative steal compared to the other 2 cars.

Conclusion:

True, ticking the M-sport package option, specifying Surround View, Park Assistant & Comfort Seats and upgrading to the 20” wheels among other things kinda bumped the asking price of the 640i to an not inconsiderable $380,000 – but these are options (save for the Comfort Seats which came standard in the 650i) that I would have added onto the 650i anyway – effectively, that was a game leveller for me, and so I signed on the dotted line for what would be my future daily driver – an all new, BMW 2011/2012 F13 640i M-sport Carbon Black Metallic Coupe with two toned Cinnamon Brown/Black interior, shod in 20” Light Alloy, 373M-style Double-spoke wheels.

Actually, not long after I wrote that, I had a serious attack of indecisiveness, and I wanted to upgrade to a 650i, but unfortunately, by then, BMW Asia had already firmed up my order and so that's that. No regrets, no surrender, no honest mistakes and NO RETHINKS.
