AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID or in short, ATF is used in vehicles with automatic transmission. ATF typically comes in red or green to distinguish it from other fluid in the vehicle.

The transmission fluid is optimized for the requirements of a transmission such as gear lubrication, valve operation, torque converter and brake band friction.

The modern day ATF contains a wide variety of chemical compounds and additives to improve lubrication qualities such as rust and corrosion inhibitors, anti-wear additives, detergents, dispersants to protect and clean metal surfaces and more.

Control arms and their integrated ball joints are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension system. It literally controls the wheels and suspensions as they go through a range of motions during drive.

Most control arms consists of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber and metal and lubricated in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The grease inside the housing can evaporate or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles.

As the ball joint is worn out, it can result in excessive movement inside the housing and your steering and handling of the car become less précise. In extreme scenario, the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely.

A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is dangerous and life-threatening and should be be replaced at regular intervals.

A BMW 640i came for Timing Gear Replacement

Hi Everyone,

The function of your BMW timing gears is to allow the camshaft and crankshaft to turn the timing chain. The pistons are moved up and down by the turning of the crankshaft which also allows the intake and exhaust valves on the cylinders to open and close. These components are important for optimum engine timing.

As the piston moves downward, the intake valves open to allow fuel and air into the cylinders. As the piston moves upward, the exhaust valves open to expel exhaust air from the cylinders.

If the intake valves are not functioning properly, the correct air/fuel mixture will be able to enter into the cylinders. If the exhaust valves are not opening and close properly, exhaust air will be trapped inside the cylinder.

If the timing gears are failing, the valve timing and ignition timing will not be accurate. Noises from the engine compartment may occur, causing the engine to run rough, backfire or stalled.

The automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in some cars lasts a “lifetime” but it is a good idea to replace the fluid every 90,000 kilometers.

If you are unsure when you had the last service, replace the fluid as soon as possible will extend the life of your automatic transmission.

Check your car manual to determine the type of transmission fluid for your car.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) fills your automatic transmission as well as the torque converter. Unless the old ATF is drained by a flushing machine, don’t expect to flush all the old fluid out. It is general acceptable that old ATF inside the torque converter will remain and mixes with the new fluid.

A blower motor comprises of a motor and a fan that regulates air flow into the passenger cabin through the vents.

Valve Cover

Your car engine top is a removable metal valve cover so the mechanic can access the valves for adjustment. The valve cover has a gasket packing (usually made of rubber or cork) which seals the cover to the engine, keeping any oil from leaking out.

If the gasket is worn out, engine oil will leak, causing the engine to lose oil. Running the car too long without the gasket replacement can cause serious engine damage.

Common symptoms indicating your valve cover gasket needs replacement are;

Oil is leaking.

Debris and oil around the valve cover.

Whiff of oil smell coming from the engine when you drive.

Oil found in the spark plug wells.

To find out if your valve cover gasket is OK, simply pop up the hood to look at your engine.

OIL COOLER

The engine oil cooler is usually of water-to-oil heat exchanger that allows the engine to remove excess heat from the oil.

Heated engine oil is fed to the oil cooler from an adapter located between the engine block and the engine oil filter. The heat absorbed by the cooling system is transferred to the air as it passes through the radiator.

The oil cooler, though normally lasts a life-time. However, like any mechanical component, it is subjected to wear and tear despite careful maintenance.

Below are a few of the symptoms that the oil cooler may need replacement.

• Coolant in the engine oil.

Coolant in the oil pan can damage the engine.

• Oil leaks from the oil cooler system.

Built within the adapter is an o-ring or gasket. Failed adapter may force engine oil out of the engine. You may notice a puddle of oil on the ground under the vehicle.

When an engine loses oil level, it loses the ability to lubricate itself leading to increased engine temperature and premature parts failure.

• Coolant leaks from the oil cooler.

External oil cooler failure may force engine coolant to leak from the engine. Coolant leaks from the oil cooler may result in overheating and mechanical component damage.


If your car has any of the above symptoms, it will require both the oil cooler and the engine oil to be completely flushed of all contaminations. The oil cooler and adapter, if failed will require replacement.

Your mechanics should check your brake rotors at every major servicing performed on your BMW.

Generally the lifespan of a BMW rotor is 1.5 times that of the brake pads.

Although it is not necessary to replace them together, it is prudent to do so because the rotors don't last long enough to completely "skip" a car-servicing cycle.

Inspect your brake rotors for cracks, scoring or pulsation when braking. Visually, the brake rotor may look good but still be worn out.

A good sign that the brake rotors are worn out is finding ridges around the edges.
