Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Hi lKM, can PM me which workshop, cost and how long it takes?
I was using 10W 40 oil before and I have to top up 1 liter every 2000+ km.
I changed oil to 10W 40 and it seems better, about 4000+ km before topping up.
Quite sian. Thought of solving the problem.
Thanks in advance :)

Hi bro,

Francis will do a good job on the overhaul. Did mine with him late last year and no oil loss till now.

Havent seen him for a while, which is a good thing but will have to visit him for some maintainance work soon.

honestly, you got to see your priorities.
Most ws will wanna help u rectify and solve the issue but in order to check the origin of the engine oil leakage,
they need to open up the engine, into the piston, gasket and valve seals.

most of the time it is valve seal, but if budget restricts u, u can try doing valve seal first.
bcos many bros also tried and doing fine.
unless ur oil leak goes into aircon, exhaust or anywhere else, u really got to solve it.

according to my ws guy, he said if oil leak drips on the floor, that kind still not so bad.
if really leak until cant be found, that one really is severe.

to refill engine oil every 2000km can burn our wallets mannnnnn.... :(

so i suggest you find out the origin of your oil leak issue by ur trusted workshop. or i can intro mine to you.

*thanks bro LKM for his help and also being so nice to recommend me his ws too.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Check bro Aaron_BMW thread on valve seals change only.

Otherwise your best bet is JB workshops, and it will still cost you a few K's, which is alot cheaper than in SG.

Any bros know of any local BMW specialise WS willing to perform valve seal/gasket changed? I call up 2 site sponsor WS all said top overhaul, they don't do seal/gasket change only :(
My car is 7yrs old and just want to drive on till the COE price is lower (hoping) and then changed car. Do not want to spend thousands to overhaul.
I know many bros here go to JB for servicing. But I am noob to JB, had not travel to JB for the past 10yrs.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Hey all! Some PM's replied! I might have missed some of you... If you would like more info, please PM me, and I'll reply to you.

Anyway, update: Ran about 1500km since last valve seals change. Typically, before the change, at this point, my oil level would have dropped to about 1/2 or 1/3 remaining. It's still remaining FULL for now! Wheeeeew weeeet! I'm pretty pleased so far.

Wonder if this FULL level can hold out until my next oil change at 10,000km or not. Will post my report here as I go along...

Did you really mean that you used to use 10W30 previously instead? Hahaha.... Yes, thicker oils do help - only to a certain extent. Until we fix the problem at its roots. Downtime was about 1 day. Sent it in the morning, and collected ride early evening. But I think that depends alot on their workload for that day. Cost was approx SGD400+.... But you probably have to get the workshop to quote as he may have given me a slight discount. Hahah...

Sorry for the confusion. I used 10W 40 before. Now I'm on 10W 50. Better...

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Hi bros, just got the prompt to +1L. As mentioned earlier, I switch oil from 10W 40 to 10W 50 and it actually help. I used to top up every 2000+ km but after switching to thicker oil, I only need to top up after 5000 km. But I supposed it will get worse in time to come. Still contemplating whether to change the valve seal :(

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Well, depends on how long more your car has to go.... If you still have 3 yrs or more, then I'll say go ahead with the change. Doubt it's gonna hold out that long. Plus, the earlier you change, the longer you get to enjoy it! Don't wait till left half year then forced to have to change....

Of course, if you are intending to sell / scrap the car, then hold it out lah.... 1ltr every 5000km is still rather acceptable lah.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Report:
I've driven about 3000km since my valve seals change. Before the replacement, this would be about the time where a 1L top up is required. Now, oil level gauge is still showing "full". So I'm happily certain that the seals change have resolved my oil consumption issue.

Now, another issue has popped up. Oil level gauge now a little erratic. Sometime showing me "full", then it may just drop to "half", or "3/4", and then back to "full" again. Sigh.... Maybe it's time to change the oil level sensor at next servicing...

Is your oil level erratic while stationary or were the measurements taken when you are traveling? If it's the former, get it checked. If it's the latter, the oil levels typically differ from time to time in the journey as the oil gets "thrown around" in the case as you accelerate and then "settle" if you are idling. The oil level measurement is supposed to be taken after warming up the engine while car is parked. To confirm, leave the car to warm up instead and observe the readings over say, 5-10mins. Should not fluctuate. If it does, refer to the former.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Hahah... Typically taken while driving. Ever since I had the "disappearing oil" syndrome, I've had a habit of checking the oil level every now-and-then. Sometimes, several times a trip. =)

Which problem were you referring to? Oil consumption or fluctuating oil level indication??
