Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Typically around 5-6 year mark, the valve seals will harden and wear out, this is when the engine oil starts getting burnt and expel into the exhaust. You will notice a very black exhaust tip if you leave this problem alone and do not fix it. Low or high mileage doesn't matter.

My 5 year old 320 also have the engine oil disappearing problem. I got it fixed by changing the valve seals. I also changed the oil separator for good measure.

So far so good and by the way I am using the 30 weight oil with no further issues. I maintain my car properly and in a typical singaporean kiasu manner but still such things happen, it seems rather disappointing for a low mileage user like me.

yeah ... for bmw even you drive like kitty problem still come
so ... just whack it la ... whack or no whack .... oil still disappear, valvtronic motor still chui, ignition coil still chui, water pump & fuel pump when time up ... also chui ....

Agreed, I do stretch the car's legs pretty once in awhile and drive it like it is meant to be. I replaced quite a few of those you mentioned as well. So well gotta maintain it till scrap as coe super expensive now.

I think so too as well, I hope it can last till scrap though.

Finally I can remove the extra 1L bottle of EO from my boot.
Had travel for >5000km after top overhaul and a number of parts change. Engine oil level still remain full.
Previously every 1500 - 2000km need to top up.

Hi Aaron , got your message with many thanks.

Cheers :)

Hi guys,

I am facing the same problem, topping up engine oil every 2000km. Mine is E90, 323i, can anyone share their workshop contact and also roughly the cost.

Cheers
Nandha

Got the same problem, can anyone pm me the workshop details. Thx

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

My car is leaking again despite repairing the leakage from the top previously.
Changed engine mounting but I suspect it's leaking somewhere at the bottom.

Was repaired less than a month ago, really sian. May need to spend another bomb.
Don't feel like going back to the previous workshop.
Anyone can recommend any to visit?

It used to be 1ltr of oil top up every 6000km. Then it came down to 5000km. Then 4000km. Then 3000km. Now it's 1ltr of engine oil top up required every 2xxx km!!! Buay tahan! Plus with current COE prices, cannot buy new car leh! Sianz!

Workshop recommended engine valve seals change. Parts are cheap - I think less than $2 per seal (there are total of 16qty for the 320i). But labour is the expensive deal - paid about SGD400 in all for the seals change. But at least for now, car feels better to drive with, and the oil drinking has so far stopped.... Will report again at the next oil change interval. So my E90's no more thirsty now!

Hi Bro, can PM me the details of the workshop you did your valve seals, please. Thank you.

My 'engine oil disappearing act' has been resolved.
WS replaced the faulty sensor and returned me the extra 3L of engine oil that I have topped up everytime the 'Low engine oil' alarm came on.

Damage: SGD265

if it was due to faulty sensor, the Low Engine Oil warning will still be there no matter how much L you topped up

this is weird

any kind soul can PM me the ws? hehee

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Should not rush into changing valves just because someone else describe
same symptom as yours
Better to get ws to trouble shoot than to self-prescribe the fix
Most likely reasons how oil consumption varies:
1.Even when new, some engines will consume more oil than others.
In passenger cars, an oil use of 0.1-0.3% of the fuel consumption is seen as normal.
Even within the same series of engines, variations are present and about 20% of
the engines have a higher or lower oil consumption than average.

2.A long list of mechanical problems may lead to oil being used up,
such as wear and damage of seals and gasket, the bearings, cylinders,
ring grooves, connecting rods, etc.

3.Driving style has a huge impact on oil consumption.
Frequent acceleration and driving at high RPM will inevitably
increase both oil and fuel consumption.

4.Failure to respect the oil drain interval will lead to oil being used up faster.
Dirty oil will block the thin oil passages and some oil will remain trapped there,
instead of flowing back to the sump.

5.Inappropriate viscosity grade: too thin oils with lower than recommended
viscosity will tend to enter the combustion chamber easier and get burnt
together with the fuel.

6.Similar to a lower-than needed oil viscosity, too high engine temperature
will also result in thinner oil and increased consumption due to burning.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

I used to drive an RX8 and I thought that was one of the last few cars that need topping up often!

Learnt that E90 needs to top up too but no way as frequent as the RX8.

And talking about sensors, less than a week after servicing at PML the oil level went crazy for a few days asking me to top up +1. But i know that's not right unless I have a leak.

Left it alone for a week then level went to 3/4 full and stayed that way for 2 months now. I hope that's not the norm after every servicing!

I just did an oil change about 1500km ago,now the engine oil level seems unstable. After a long drive (

Hi, please read Post #55....... will solve your mystery.

Thanks bro, will try it again and monitor.

so that means it is most accurate 5-10minutes after warming up the engine right?

Yup. When you start driving, the engine oil gets sloshed all over the place and hence the readings are no longer as accurate.
