If does well but can't afford to go good university...... how???

Good question.

If he/she tried her best (e.g. try scholarship/bursary, work part-time), still cannot afford it, I will chip in a bit*. If still cannot, then too bad, stay in Singapore and study. Anyway NUS/NTU/SMU are not too bad either. (Note: I also study in Singapore. Very good and sart.)

*How much I will chip in will depend on his/her attitude. If he/she does well and really really has the strong will/urge/interest to study that specific field in that particular university, I will contribute more. If he/she only want to go overseas to play, I will ask hir/her to fly his/her own kite there.

Lastly, thanks for never pichiak my lobang.

I will NOT buy a car for my kid. I can contribute, but I will not buy the whole thing. They need to be responsible for their own purchases.

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

degrees r bullshitt in the real world.

but how do u judge a candidate otherwise?

i believe that jobs for young newbies. a certain set of guide has to be establish. and education has to be one of them. however i wud also give consideration to those with experience...

Oh, I know how to handle that. I have lots of experience handling my niece. If she asks me to buy her a toy, she must fulfill 10 conditions first. Because I kiam gana.

ok la, I say only. If she sits down and starts crying, I sure lose.

U were from LCK last time? I was a farm boy in Neo Tiew. Zoe Tay was my neighbor I never knew....

Yeah, our family ran a small poultry farm. Then, PAP, in the name of development, claimed it. Zoe Tay was also my neighbour! OK, not exactly nearby, but I'll still put a claim to fame that way.

Anyway, the reason why I asked detach8 about LCK was because some of the strongest values I hold dear to my heart even till this day, were inculcated from those days. You work hard, you don't fcuking expect the world to owe you a living, and when shit happens (like when we lost the farm), you jolly well pick your sorry asses up and work harder still to make ends meet.

Most of the Singaporean strawberry generation nowadays don't even know that real chickens have feathers on them, much less identify with those values just mentioned. They have this bloated sense of self-entitlement and self-importance, and this idea that the entire universe revolves around them.

Well, I got news for you buddy, that idea went out with the Catholic Church during Galileo's time....

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

Inflation affects everything, including your degrees - basic entry level back in my time may be the O levels or A levels (hey, can become school principal, OK!). If you had a basic degree, you're way up there.

Now, everyone has a degree. It's new new O levels. People are going for Masters as the new basic degree.

In 5 or 10 years' time, Masters (especially those from half-baked institutions, some of which allow you to do a Masters even without a basic Bachelors) will be the new O levels, and people will be bandying PhD's as the new basic degree.

So, given inflation, how in the world can a fresh grad expect to earn $1000 more than a diploma holder, when the degree is as common as a street hooker at Geylang?

Bottom line is, a degree may be useful in opening the door a crack, maybe helpful in getting a toe-hold in. But, if you can't hold your own once you get it, no degree in the fcuking universe will help you keep that job.

wat u r saying is all good etc....but point here is...where shud the govt focus on? wat direction do u create for the population? we all know that education is only good for the initial first step. but mr khaw shooting his mouth off does nothing for the populous. govt says one thing but does another.

If I have a kid, I will ask him or her to try her best in his/her studies.

2 possibilities:

1) If he/she cannot make it to university, due to insufficient IQ, that doesn't matter. Don't be unhappy. He or she can still make it in life with good EQ. (Disclaimer: if my kid didn't make it to Uni because he/she is lazy, then I will spank my kid - nothing to do with the paper, but because of the bad attitude in life.)

2) If he/she does well in her studies, I will ask her to go for a good university and a good degree. Because if all else fails, he/she will still have something to fall back on.

Just my humble opinion, no right or wrong. Everyone has a different perspective in life. And also, my views above may change with time and experience in life. Cheers everyone, We Are The World.

P.S. JM please don't pichiak my lobang.

hello.... you referring to your 'niece'??

I know you are a great 'uncle' who will finance her tertiary education fully... your 'sister' say one.

just dun go around telling everyone you are a Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.... cos you are not Iron Man....muahahaha

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

Very interesting thread, good points/arguments from participants but back to the question KBW was asked and his subsequent reply:

“Mr Khaw was responding to a participant who said the Government should set aside more university places for Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and polytechnic graduates.”

My view; govt probably can set aside more university places for ITE and poly graduates but at what cost? Lowering the cutoff grade levels? Unfortunately, not all ITE and poly grads (or A level students) will make it to LOCAL universities due to one and only one reason, grades are not good enough; HARD TRUTH and very bitter to swallow for the individual.

I went through the poly route before going overseas for a degree (could have gone to NUS/NTU but had the opportunity to study overseas so took that chance). A few of my poly friends, some from O levels and some from ITE, studied hard and achieved the grades required to get ourselves into universities (majority went to NUS/NTU, minority overseas) while some did not. So no matter how many places are set aside for ITE/poly/A level students in our local universities, some will not make the cut off as their grades do not qualify for the respective courses. It sucks but its reality. And universities aren’t going to lower their standards just to appease the masses.

And now to his reply “Singaporeans do not need to be university graduates to be successful”. This is more of a PC answer, he is trying to appease ITE/Poly students that if they don’t make it to university (based on my point above), they can still be successful with their respective qualifications. This ‘successful’ is subjective but if one can demonstrate the willingness to work hard and keep abreast of new developments in their job scope, they can go far and be successful.

It’s a much longer journey than say a degree holder but it is possible. Yes, a lot of job vacancies require a degree holder; I do not deny that. But there are also positions for ITE/poly grads, it is a matter of accepting the job and working hard/learning on the job to acquire new skills to progress up the ladder. There is a progression ceiling for sure, but some have managed to breakthrough it by demonstrating and proving their skills to their superiors to earn that promotion.

And yes, I would want my kids to go to university to earn a degree IF he/she achieves the grades required to earn them a place at that institution; be it locally or overseas (this one need to strike TOTO :p). Otherwise, swallow the bitter truth and face reality

Just my 2 cents, have a good day ahead! :D
