Re: E36 318IS with problems
Wahhh.. so many good bros there to help me and now I even need to mulit-quote.. one day we should meet up I treat dinner...
I don't even dare to overwork my car!!
When I warm up my E36 318IS, I just let it run its own for 3 minutes until the temperature needle moved half a cm...
My Mileage beats iScoupe...
458000 already and I was thinking,
Oh shit almost half a million already...
Anyone can advise me if going to JB to do:-
1) Body kits
2) Respray
3) ICE (In Car Entertainment
4) Engine Overhaul
5) Full servicing and repairs

Wow, my friend told me to over-haul engine too. But my COE until Jun-2013 and now the engine is still kicking. Any thing lower class than over-haul? Because if I overhaul, I think I will need to renew COE again. Then again just like iScoupe said, if its a 318 E36 Cabriot I confirm overhaul and renew COE...pengful;608484 said:The Chery QQ example was just an example but my point is you are going to be sucked dry fixing all these problems. There are 9 known problems and many more unknown ones. These unknown ones will surprise you when you least expect them so you had better have deep pockets. Even my 4-year old car surprised me with a valvetronic motor failure recently. For a car close to 20 years, nevermind if it is a BMW or Merc, you know there are things that can never be completely fixed.
If you really love the car, be it the shape or simply the badge, I would suggest an engine overhaul and a rebuild. Good luck.
5000RPM?! Wouldn't over Rev meh?iScoupe;608500 said:i think i can clear some of the E36 doubts.
My E36 318iS 19yrs old, to me is just a simple car & little electronics. Reliable if you maintain it well. Never fail to start since I got it 9yrs ago.
JUst regular wear & tear to take note. Replace engine oil every 5000km with 10W-50. Clean filter. Take note on fan belts, casket rubber seal & check fuse box for any abnormalities like melted fuse. The car rpm fluctuates is common but it will go away after warm up or rev of engine. The air flow sensor is of older technology but it will not damage the car. U can try hold the rpm at 5000rpm for 1minute, everything will be ok.
Conclusion;
Same engine 430,000km , still powerful, FC 9km/litre
i rev my car redline daily & it still kicking.
Just got $170 & 8 points. i da man!

Really or not?! Benz so wants to show how tahan their engine is.zorro;608512 said:Wow 430k km done and engine still kicking...Time for overhaul or slap in the Supersprint! Btw in germany any Mercedes owner who clock a million km will get big reward from Mercedes Benz...this is what the cab driver told me and the chap has more than a million km on his E200.

You know if they do old BMW? Where are they located.marklee;608527 said:What iScoupe says is true...as long as you maintain it well, know what to look out for, you can get a reliable ride from the E36. That being said, it is expensive to maintain.
I know someone restoring a 50s Beetle in JB. Doing everthing under the sun except the engine for only 9K+ SGD. You can look into that route.
