The Chery QQ example was just an example but my point is you are going to be sucked dry fixing all these problems. There are 9 known problems and many more unknown ones. These unknown ones will surprise you when you least expect them so you had better have deep pockets. Even my 4-year old car surprised me with a valvetronic motor failure recently. For a car close to 20 years, nevermind if it is a BMW or Merc, you know there are things that can never be completely fixed.

If you really love the car, be it the shape or simply the badge, I would suggest an engine overhaul and a rebuild. Good luck.
Wow, my friend told me to over-haul engine too. But my COE until Jun-2013 and now the engine is still kicking. Any thing lower class than over-haul? Because if I overhaul, I think I will need to renew COE again. Then again just like iScoupe said, if its a 318 E36 Cabriot I confirm overhaul and renew COE...

i think i can clear some of the E36 doubts.

My E36 318iS 19yrs old, to me is just a simple car & little electronics. Reliable if you maintain it well. Never fail to start since I got it 9yrs ago.

JUst regular wear & tear to take note. Replace engine oil every 5000km with 10W-50. Clean filter. Take note on fan belts, casket rubber seal & check fuse box for any abnormalities like melted fuse. The car rpm fluctuates is common but it will go away after warm up or rev of engine. The air flow sensor is of older technology but it will not damage the car. U can try hold the rpm at 5000rpm for 1minute, everything will be ok.

Conclusion;
Same engine 430,000km , still powerful, FC 9km/litre
i rev my car redline daily & it still kicking.
Just got $170 & 8 points. i da man!
5000RPM?! Wouldn't over Rev meh?
I don't even dare to overwork my car!!
When I warm up my E36 318IS, I just let it run its own for 3 minutes until the temperature needle moved half a cm...

What's Supersprint Exhaust? Where get and the damage? My car confirm not stock exhaust. Got LTA Cert one.

Wow 430k km done and engine still kicking...Time for overhaul or slap in the Supersprint! Btw in germany any Mercedes owner who clock a million km will get big reward from Mercedes Benz...this is what the cab driver told me and the chap has more than a million km on his E200.
Really or not?! Benz so wants to show how tahan their engine is.
My Mileage beats iScoupe...
458000 already and I was thinking,
Oh shit almost half a million already...

What iScoupe says is true...as long as you maintain it well, know what to look out for, you can get a reliable ride from the E36. That being said, it is expensive to maintain.

I know someone restoring a 50s Beetle in JB. Doing everthing under the sun except the engine for only 9K+ SGD. You can look into that route.
You know if they do old BMW? Where are they located.
Anyone can advise me if going to JB to do:-
1) Body kits
2) Respray
3) ICE (In Car Entertainment
4) Engine Overhaul
5) Full servicing and repairs

Re: E36 318IS with problems

In Spore a 318IS can catch up with any supercar....its matter of guts and willingness to face police fine....There is just no road for super car to max out the speed..

Go and google Supersprint. Mockngbrd is selling one for your car. If you want new can check with Jeep Chee.

I would advise against ICE & cosmetic stuff for now. If you plan to keep the car, save the money for more important things such as getting rid of the rust spots, new wiring etc.

From memory, the following things will give way if they have not been replaced/serviced regularly..esp after 450,000km.
1. Alternator
2. Radiator
3. Thermostat
4. Air-con compressor
5. All rubber hoses...including fuel hoses :oooops:
6. Steering rack
7. Control arms
8. Fan clutch (if it's still belt driven)
9. Clutch slave cylinder
10. Boot wire harness
11. Ignition cylinder

As for engine overhaul, get a reputable workshop to do a compression test and advise you on what needs to be changed.

I didn't know ball can expand when licked...I only know balls will shrink slightly after shooting

Re: E36 318IS with problems

I think I may have a supersprint type of exhaust. I'm sure it is not stock.
Its making too much noise and it makes ladies head turn lei.. I'm shy~
Even the Air-Intake also not stock. I think its Open-Pod Filter with a small rectangle sensor?

About ICE, I think I don't need to spent a lot, maybe the wiring. I already have a SoundStream set from my previous AXIO.
Now I have another problem. My Pionner Audio head-unit occupy 2 slots but E36 318IS only have one. How???
Do I need to make one? If have to, make it Carbon Fiber~ LoL

Re: E36 318IS with problems

hello, u put a note on my windscreen last Sun evening? I'm the black E36 owner. Glad to know you.

I also have some issues with my car recently.. the air cond blower and controller went down. Visited Propel to scout for second hand parts. You may like to visit this place as there's always E36s on the chopping board. I got a number of interesting parts this way. :)

Yeah I did.
You mentioned chopping board? Then I'll be afraid to go.

Propel is a used parts dealer which specialises in continental cars. They take parts from old cars and sell them.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

In my pursuit in finding a good E36, i have test driven a number of 316 and 318s. Yes, I reckon you have to be realistic in buying a 20 year old car, you'd definitely need to exercise due diligence and repair the wear and tear parts.

Drove an e36 recently and the engine jerked at low rpm while traveling dead slow towards the red light. Naturally it died and the battery and oil indicator came on. Happened thrice while drive to a dead stop. Put the gear in park mode, re-started the egnine and kept the revs up before releasing the handbrake.

That's the thing about a coe car, you're bound to have these surprises. My guess was the AFM/sensor cos the battery is new, dipstick shows full. But than again, it could be anything!

Re: E36 318IS with problems

While we can buy original parts from places like Eng Soon, it is not easy nor cheap to find replacement parts that maybe better in performance or look, or that may work for our model of car. That's why I find Propel to be an interesting hunting ground.. e.g. I recently acquired a set of 4 AC Schnitzer carbon fibre, M3 side gills, etc.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

Hi guys, reopening this thread again as my car is giving me another deep shit problem...

Most of the time, I cannot punch into gear 1-3 normally without stepping 10-20% on the gas.
And sometimes, when red light turns green, I cannot punch into gear 1 or 2 and I have to step the clutch or gas pedals several times before the gear is successfully punched in.
Last 2 weeks, I went to M&Q they say its clutch then after they check, clutch just changed. So now they say gear box problem and has yet call me for quotation. I called back 2 times and still no replies.

Any kind bros or sis out there intro a good pro workshop? Going overseas new week so it may be a good time to leave my car for a week..

Re: E36 318IS with problems

Seems like you got a lemon there after following your thread... when is your COE expiring? If its a couple of years time, you make wanna take your chances and hunt down a used drive train from propel as replacement. Alternatively, ship in a re-con unit.

I've already expect a lemon so I'm not really suprised. Just have to live with it and that day I taunt at the car say "Nabei I see what things you can spolit somemore!" Weird right? But I really did that.. hahaha...

COE Exp at June 2013. I'll like to ship in a recon Transmission but dunno if its worth it... How much and where to get? Propel quote me 900+ for a used one...
