E90 LCI 318/320 ecu tuning

Re: E90 LCI 318/320 ecu tuning

Hi All,

I am thinking of getting a 07-08 320i. just wanted to verify on the stock HP. Thought it should read at 156hp? How come i see that some bros ride stock is btw 110-130hp?

Thanks

It's probably the way the bhp is measured. Bimmer probably measures it on an engine dyno. I.e. a dyno with the load connected directly to the output shaft of the engine. All the dynos done here are chassis dynos, which measure power at the wheels and then use some sort of mathematical model to back-calculate the engine power. In addition to an imperfect model, chassis dynos probably suffer from other losses as well like wheel slippage, loss of power through the torque converter etc.

Hence the vastly different values. If you can get 150+ bhp on a chassis dyno, you have a real keeper. :)

Just to make sure i understand all these technical terms correctly. are you saying, theoretically & technically all bimmers should have the bhp as advertised. But different measurement methods derive to different result...,

Makes sense.. also as an engineer I cannot see how you can accurately estimate flywheel hp based on readings taken from the wheels. There's too much variability and randomness in everything between the dyno and the engine. Slippage between the wheel and the dyno, losses in the differential, drive shaft, gearbox, etc. My guess is that the model used to estimate the engine figures are just based on typical figures.

I'm guessing that bimmer should be fairly accurate - give or (more likely) take 10 bhp - in their numbers, seeing that they never got into the trouble that Ford and Mazda did.

To also answer your question in that other thread; yeah my jerk-before-stop is gone too. :)

Well well, this is easier for a layman like to me to understand. Thanks!

More practical way to feel the differences is to pay "school fees" to whoever the tuner i will be going to when i do get my ride ;)

Cheers.

Haha you're welcome. It might not be 100% correct though since I'm a computer engineer, not an automotive engineer. Lol.

Boss Automotive has gotten very famous for their ECU tuning, particularly for the 318i and 320i. I've noticed increasing gains in the latest tuning figures. I got my ECU tuned there (in fact it's the FIRST 320i LCI tuned by them.. haha) and I'm extremely happy.. especially when coupled with all my other mods.

For the 6-potters Boss is famous for their Powerbox piggy-back ECUs.

hi all,

Just to share my tuning result by Alan from BOSS.

After driving the car for a year in stock form, feel the urge to want to improve the sluggishness when moving off from stationary.

2 weeks ago, went there for servicing as well as beef up my pre-owned E90 320i (year 2005).

Now the gear change feel smoother for the lower gears, pick up is better and moving off from stationary has significantly improved.

The Dyno results:
Stock:
Motor Pow. 153.2 Cv
Wheel Pow. 119.6 Cv
Loss Pow. 26.6 Cv @ 6069 RPM
Eng. Torque 212.1 Nm @ 3319 Rpm

Tuned:
Motor Pow. 174.2 Cv
Wheel Pow. 132.1 Cv
Loss Pow. 33.0 Cv @ 6311 RPM
Eng. Torque 230.1 Nm @ 4396 Rpm

Nic told me that the car can squeeze out a few more ponies if I replaced my stock spark plugs & air filter. Anyway, one thing at a time and meantime enjoying my drive with its extra power.

Dude, can you post your dyno chart? I am curious how a 320 can push out the number of horses you indicated. 2005 engines are different? Tks.

Maybe it's the N46NB20 "Euro" engine, rated at 170bhp. Heard the PIs bring in that version. The PML cars have the N46B20 engines.

Re: E90 LCI 318/320 ecu tuning

I'm not good at this stuff, will try to snap a picture of the chart and put it up.

It is a PML car I bought from PPSL last year.

Bro could you check the label on the driver side door on your engine type? It should look like N46B20B or N46NB20 or something along those lines. Post it here and we'll be able to tell you your advertised bhp and torque.

Awesome bro, you really, really have a keeper here! The N46B20B is rated at 156bhp.. your stock is off by just a few bhp and now your tuned engine is more powerful than the N46NB20.

Wishing you many many years of great driving with this baby!

Thanks Bro, can kindly enlighthen me the diff between N46B20B and N46NB20 ?

From what I can tell from the specs, B20 has a compression ratio of 10.5 while the NB20 has a compression ratio of 12. :)

Other than that, the other bros here might be able to shed more light. :D

Re: E90 LCI 318/320 ecu tuning

how come your N46B20 so powderful. does it comes with sprint booster .... hehe
congrats and enjoy your juiced engine ... fastest 320 in town ? :D
stock dyno is 153bhp/212Nm ... BMW gives you additional 12Nm for free ....

Thanks Bro pbear & wt_know.

Thought Sprint Booster only give better throttle feel and doesn't add any power.

Other than the tunning by BOSS, the whole car is still in stock condition.

Bro,

Despite the car age, your car is probably more powerful then a lot of new cars. Notice that your both your torque and power curve, didn't even shift left, probably because it is already near its optimal level. Envy you man.

Congrats....................time to up Coilover for Sheer Handling Pleasure......(* there's a bro selling a set of AP coilover)

cheers
