This is our first look at the new Nissan GT-R racer, which will debut in next year's Japanese Super GT series.

Unfortunately for Nissan and its racing/tuning arm, NISMO, this is not a series in which the production car's amazing four-wheel-drive traction will give it an advantage, like the Skyline GT-Rs of old: the cars are built to very specific regulations which outlaw four-wheel-drive and allow bespoke silhouette designs.

This year, the championship was won by a Honda NSX, which beat Nissan's 350Z racer. Whether or not the new GT-R will be more successful remains to be seen, but it shares little with the road-going car. Nissan GT-R Still, it doesn't rob the Super GT car of its visual impact. It's quite something, and it's a shame they'll have to run it with sponsors - this black colour is perfect.

Re: Nissan GT-R Officially Revealed

Heard - but not confirmed - that Nissan are putting a super high tech GPS based immobiliser in their cars (all come with standard GPS anyway so quite possible) which will disable Jap cars if they are exported and driven elsewhere. Something to do with the Jap domestic market models not being sold elsewhere.

Anyone else have this feeling?

Plus also - UK market pricing indicates three versions: a slightly detuned one with 4-pot calipers at GBP29K, a full blown one at GBP35K and an uber - evo one with cf on top of the full blown at GBP57K. All this makes me think - the one being sold here at $320 should be the evo with the cf stuffy right?

I think that was some BS by some PI in Australia who couldn't get cars and tried to smoke the market. One of the PIs who are handling exports to UK seem to have no issues at all.

Personally with the number of tunnels across Japan (pretty long ones too) I find it difficult to believe they would put in such immobilizers. Can you imagine the dangers of a car being immobilized in a tunnel? Besides, GPS signals are never 100% accurate.

That is a very very old rumour.

I believe that at launch, the model line up will be very similar to the Japanese launch.

Same engine, same transmission and same brake system.

Differences are in frill: rim color, upgraded ICE system, better grip aka summer (vs all weather) tyres, immobilizers, alarm system etc.

This does not preclude a more hardcore version in the future. A Japanese documentary mentioned a special edition being in development, but that would more likely be a superleggera version, price undetermined. Probably a lot more expensive though. Think 997CS to 997GT/RS kind of premium.

Re: Nissan GT-R Officially Revealed

Ach! Put in my place... another sad bit of news is Nissan has no plan at the mo to get the car in officially so we ARE at the PI mercy.

Is there any specified spec list for the vehicles the PI are punting?

There's definitely a lot of rumours out there :) didn't mean to pick on you. Just regurgitating some of the discussions from the UK GTR owners' forum.

Yeah, TC is probably not going to bring in this car. So it would be up to the PI to support. Both GR and MB are working with HKS and Jun for the diagnostic equipment.

Not sure abt other PIs.

As for spec list, the GTR is pretty much like ordering a 911. There are 3 basic trims but you should be able to spec in other stuff like LED daylight running lights, reverse cameras, etc etc

AFAIK, virtually all the first 2-3 shipments of the GTR have been spoken for. I don't know if any PIs are bringing in any extra stock. I suspect the rest would be on indent basis.

The specs and options can be found here

Re: Nissan GT-R Officially Revealed

Hi guys. I've always purchased new from authorised dealers here. From what I gather from this thread, the GT-R will only available in Sing from a PI and will cost in the region of S$320k am I right?

From an AD, I would expect a fulsome 3 year warranty with all the bells and whistles (as well as taking for granted that their engineers and technicicians will have the expertise and experience to do whatever is necessary to keep my motor running as new). So will I be able to get the same peace of mind - and level of service - by forking out that sort of money to a PI for the GT-R (particularly given how technologically advanced it is)? What sort of issues or problems might I expect if I go the PI instead of AD route for a car like this? Thanks in advance.

Pricing is ard S$300-320k. S$320k would be for the premium edition (with Thatcham alarm, Bose sound system, leather seats etc)

Not sure abt the new GT-R but with the older one, you probably had better luck getting diagnostics done at some of the better known garages than with Tan Chong.

I know that lead tuners from Jun, MINES and Top Secret are all working on their own R35 GT-R projects and having their own diagnostic computers, as long as the PI/workshop has the right connections to the same tools, and a back-end arrangement with the Japanese factory/dealers for warranty, it should be acceptable. I know that with the Evo 9s who had issues with the magnesium fin turbos, I know of PIs who got replacement units.

Having an AD doesn't always mean problem-free cars either. I know of friends with brand new S-class and 7-series all having issues that are still not resolved.

Still every bit of assurance is great. Just make sure you get the details from the PI.

Re: Nissan GT-R Officially Revealed

Remember seeing an ad in the papers recently that listed the GT-R Black Edition for $26x,xxx. I'm sure the usual "T&Cs" apply or is it for real?

Sounds like a real steal, but probably includes the usual Ts & Cs. Heard of one PI with OMV of ard S$70+k to sell at that price. Not sure if it is the same one.

Nissan GT-R | evo News | News | evo

It’s been six long months since the roller-shutter doors of an anonymous, unmarked workshop at the Nürburgring opened to reveal a prototype of one of the most eagerly awaited cars in recent memory. Keeping a secret has never been so tough.

"The original target for the GT-R was that it had to be quicker than a 911 Turbo. This has been comfortably achieved..."

Rewind to April 30, and we arrive to find that Nissan’s rented workshop is situated within a stone’s throw of the Nordschleife’s main straight. Sadly we’re not going to have the opportunity to tilt at Nissan’s yet-to-be-set GT-R lap time of 7min 38.54sec – or even its durability-testing pace of 7min 55sec – but we are going to be let loose on the modern GP circuit for a handful of unaccompanied laps.

First impressions are of a broad-shouldered car that’s aggressively taut and has an exceptionally rigid structure. It feels quite big too, although you’re immediately confident of the GT-R’s instant response and ability to keep its not inconsiderable bulk in check.

The engine owes nothing to the old Skyline GT-R motor in hardware terms, but it shares its expressive character and distinctive vocals. You hear the turbos spool-up boost with a smooth, turbine-like whine, then cough and gurgle heartily when you back-off. You feel them working too: a rapid swell of force-fed torque that builds with real urgency and insistence. And this twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 likes revs, feeling keener and quicker-witted than the legendary 2.6-litre straight-six.

It’s also good to be free of the old car’s stupid 276bhp limit, for it allows the standard GT-R to feel more honest – and a lot more potent – without having to resort to aftermarket tuning. While that must sound like treason to Skyline diehards, it’ll surely win the brave new GT-R a whole heap of conquest buyers who expect the manufacturer and not a tuning company to release a car’s full potential.

The twin-clutch transmission is punchy, positive and smooth, even in the most aggressive shift mode. It doesn’t come close to the kind of synaptic shift speeds managed by Ferrari’s F430 Scuderia, but by less extreme standards it’s super-quick and uncannily seamless. Downshifts are equally clinical.

Stopping power is provided by 380mm discs all-round, with six-pot front and four-pot rear monobloc Brembo callipers. With over 1700kg to slow, they feel like they’re working pretty hard. Indeed a German journalist, clearly hell-bent on upholding his nation’s honour, went out with the express intention of melting them. He succeeded where the rest of us failed, but then he was, somewhat appropriately, called Bernd.

The steering has a substantial weight – a classic GT-R characteristic – but the chassis feels grippier, pointier and more intuitive than the old all-wheel drive, all-wheel-steer Skylines. It’s extremely stable, with a nose-led balance – exactly what you’d expect from a car set-up to deliver on the Nordschleife, if not as playful as you’d like on the Nürburgring’s GP track with its inviting corners and huge run-offs When pushed hard the chassis feels hugely capable and easily exploitable. You still sense that the car is doing an awful lot of work for you, it’s just that it now goes about its business in a more conventional manner. However, there’s no doubt it’s a car to make everyone drive like a hero, which is what the (Skyline) GT-R has always been about.

How does it feel on the road? Sorry, but that’s a secret we’ll be keeping for another month…

The collaborative development of the Nissan GT-R multifunction meter was presented

Oct 25, 2007
The press preview for the “40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007” was held on Wednesday, October 24th at Makuhari Messe in Chiba prefecture, and the press briefing for “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” was held in the same venue.
This is a summary of the talk session that was held in the first half of the briefing regarding the collaboration with the new model Nissan GT-R.

“Gran Turismo” (GT) series producer Kazunori Yamauchi took the podium first. The unveiling event for the new model GT-R that had been held within “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” Free Downloadable Demo at 2:30 pm earlier in the day was then reenacted at the briefing.
The press that had gathered for the briefing had only just gotten a glimpse of the form of the new model GT-R that had been presented in the exhibition center a few minutes earlier, and they spontaneously burst into applause when the GT-R was unveiled on the screen.

The chief developer of the new model GT-R, Mr. Kazutoshi Mizuno from Nissan Motors, and marketing director Yoshimitsu Kaji appeared next. A talk session between them and Mr. Yamauchi then started.

Mr. Yamauchi described his experience of being brought in as “a member of the new model GT-R development team”, and introduced how the opportunity to test-drive the new model GT-R had been made available in various locations around the world for over a year.

Mr. Yamauchi said “I don't think there is another car that is this easy to drive. The four wheels move perfectly free and unrestricted”. Mr. Mizuno said “Even if you are rocketing along the no-speed limit sections of the German Autobahn (high-speed road), it is still possible to hold a conversation within the cabin. Driving along snowy roads is also possible. Nissan have created this kind of multi-purpose car. This is a car where the winning race driver can walk to the winner's podium without appearing tired at all, even after having experienced what is intrinsically the most unrelenting form of driving. This is because a good car does not wear out the driver”.

Mr. Kaji said that the reason for the collaboration with “GT” was “Because this is a medium that allows a connection between the real and the virtual. The idea of unveiling a car in software at the same time as it is unveiled at the actual motor show venue has never been done before. I tried driving the new model GT-R in ‘GT’, and was surprised at how it felt exactly like ‘the sensation of driving the GT-R in real life’. The amazing thing about this feeling is not just the physical sensation, but also the feeling of having already driven on Suzuka Circuit. It is so realistic that when staff at Nissan Motors were shown a ‘GT’ replay video, they mistook it for the real thing”.

Mr. Yamauchi replied “I felt that because the GT-R is a national treasure of Japan, we had to recreate it with total realism. From the external form to the texture of the surface coatings, we asked Mr. Hasegawa (Nissan Motors designer in charge of designing the new model GT-R) to check it over and over again. Of course, since this a car with the ability to change the history of Japanese sports cars, we obsessed over recreating the handling”.

Collaboration with Nissan Motors has also been achieved in the past with events such as the “Skyline 50th Anniversary Event” and the “Skyline Coupe”. It is no longer a rarity for real-life cars to be recreated in “GT” and made available to the world, and this trend is continuing.

However, the collaboration with GT-R this time has been different than previous collaboration efforts, and the things that were attempted for the first time were presented here.

This time, technology and designs jointly developed for “GT” have been incorporated into the new model GT-R.

The developers of “GT”, Polyphony Digital, were given the responsibility of planning and designing the monitor called the “multifunction meter” on the new model GT-R. Mr. Mizuno declared “We believe that this is the world's first device that allows the car to tell the driver about the condition of the car”.

He said “Even though we work in completely different industries, once Mr. Yamauchi and myself began working together we realized that the basics of how we proceeded with our work was the same. That is, creating a model in our head first before beginning to create the actual object. My first impression was that I had met someone who does things the same way”.

During the development of the vehicle, construction proceeded at such an exceptional speed that “Mr. Mizuno and myself kept on advancing. That sense of speed was enjoyable” (Yamauchi).

Finally, Mr. Mizuno said “I want this multifunction meter to be further developed. In the past, ‘GT’ has reflected the technology from real cars. For the first time, the technology from ‘GT’ has now been fitted to a real car. This is the starting point for even further advancement”. Mr. Kaji said “Although the high performance of the GT-R has been the focus of attention, the car is actually packed with many new concepts. I want these ideas to be further developed. The actual GT-R has only just had the mask removed. The Free Downloadable Demo of ‘Gran Turismo 5 Prologue’ has also only just been released. In fact, nothing has actually started yet. The best is yet to come”.

Mr. Yamauchi wrapped up by saying “This year, ‘GT’ is celebrating its 10th year. 10 years ago, we could only look at the GT-R from afar and dream ‘I want to drive that car someday’, and we poured those feelings into ‘GT’. Now 10 years have passed, and we have been able to be involved in part of the development of the GT-R, and witness the unveiling. This is all deeply moving. In the future, I want to work even harder to move closer to the world of cars”.

To allow the driver to get maximum enjoyment from the new Nissan GT-R, Nissan is offering more mechanical and driving information than ever before. The new multi-function meter, developed in conjunction with Polyphony Digital Inc, designer of the Gran Turismo series for Sony PlayStation and Xanavi Informatics Corp (Navigation), is sited in the central part of the dashboard. It serves up a wealth of useful information, including:

•Mechanical information - including engine water temperature, oil temperature, oil pressure, transmission oil temperature, transmission oil pressure, turbocharger boost and front/rear torque split. In every case an individual reading can be highlighted or several different functions can be shown in the multifunction window.
spacer.gif
•Driving information - including accelerator opening, brake pedal pressure, steering angle and g-force both longitudinally and transversely. An on-board driving recorder also logs driving performance and can be a useful tool in improving driving technique.
