Re: Schools in Singapore

Sometimes not in that situation, difficult to understand. For example I'm single and available, cannot understand what's the fuss is about all these tuition and enrichment classes.

Re: Schools in Singapore

Feel sorry for the kids - have a double school life. Might as well just go to the enrichment centre's and skip the school crap. At least the kids got some personal time.

why need to go enrichment class or tuition in the 1st place?
does it means school is under deliver and need to be compensated thru outside "extra" teaching? we all know that tuition school biz is sibei good ... popular tuition centre like popular school ... hard to get in even you are willing to pay

Re: Schools in Singapore

it is a rat race out there...

kiasu parent competing ...even school and teachers also competing to be best
sometime really pity the kids of today ... stressful life inflict by the parent and school

Re: Schools in Singapore

Re: Schools in Singapore

I think race/ethnicity has very little to do with it. Culture, perhaps - I mean, we (I mean, the Chinese - sorry, I was a tad presumptuous there) have a what, 1500 year history of scholars trying for their Imperial Exams - and more importantly, trying to attain the 状元 title.

This is probably ingrained into every mother's DNA to get her son/daughter the best advantage possible via education.

Re: Schools in Singapore

we got 虎媽 ... sure win even in usa

grade less than A is not an option ...
not 1st student in all subject except gym is not acceptable

We fail to see that we are Asians here. :)

..SapphireSpite, interesting u should mention....there r truth to a certain extend. We r more competitive..

..of course, Parents I'm sure, have upmost, best interest for their kids....for their future.

..side track a bit, not so much on textbooks, Sumtimes, sum parents dun hve their kids' interest onset. It is for themselves.

..some are what one called extremists...

...These r simply Vile.

I saw a disturbing image sumwhere, hard 2 get over it. In fact pissed. How can one possibly see own precious little ones...suffer...sum kids became their parents'....trophies.

Re: Schools in Singapore

Even if parents are competitive, the point is that the delivery is being done by the enrichment centres. The schools are now more like a certification body.......

We cannot trust the school to deliver. They have abdicated a lot of their responsibility and their focus is more administrative. I have seen on occassions the entire class copying the answers of the homework to show parents that the teachers delivered on their part in schools. Teachers taking 3 days leave came back and laid the entire week's homework one shot to prove one did not twang and get the item checked off the list for delivery - If the child hands up the work - it implied teacher has taught. Actually, its the enrichment centre that got the delivery done enabling the child to do the homework and hand it up.....

Re: Schools in Singapore

at the end of the day.... it all boils down trying to differentiate one from the pack / masses.

whether here in Singapore or in China, India etc etc....

Re: Schools in Singapore

Migrate.... say Australia.... you might save on cheaper property...besides kid's annual school fees for private school KILLA hor.

then you will compete with the locals...how to differentiate your kid from the best and brightest of them? sports? academic?

I realise ang mohs sibeh good at talking hor... can sell ice to eskimos type... look at apple and how they have grown and conquered the world.

local company creative had a damn good product years ago...but asian man dunno how to do marketing properly....
