Econ growth thru pop growth is short term n unsustainable .
I used to think this way for years. until recently, when I started to observe why hk/Tokyo even Bangkok has more labels than sing. its simply because they hv critical mass in the population. I m not sure if its sustainable in many context. ie. more people cud mean more strain on the system. more competition in many areas...even higher rents etc etc etc....but I am beginning to feel that a larger population has more plus than minuses.
Sustainable growth was what drive singapore since the 60s and then the 70s when EDB was set up to drive value added industries such as shipbuilding/oil rigs n semi-con. We hv world beater such as keppel , chartered . Even SIA, Creative. So is EDB under the govn ?
this is naïve. for any country to move forward, there must be an evolution of sorts. history of any successful nation has always been about evolving. when this country was founded, it was based as a trading post. this country was beginning to gain traction from immigrants. when we gained independence, LKY recognized we had no resources, but we had a great chance to succeed in shipping.....to cut the story short...we moved into manufacturing...n then as we prospered, our labour cost could no longer be competitive. we moved into financial n then services....last I checked we have gone into bio sciences.
if we had lingered on past successes, we would have been buried 20 yrs back.
Safely is basic needs . We vote in a govn to provide more than just that. If that , why not just let the police commissioner run for election ?
