Singapore Ministers

Re: Singapore Ministers

My point is that NS men are being paid peanuts. It's about equity.

1. National Service - Namesake
2. I am happy with the taxes I'm paying.
3. If you do sign on, then as civil servant, they're not paid that shabbily.

Re: Singapore Ministers

My CEO drives a free Mercedes S350 company car with free petrol and flies Biz class anywhere...CCB GOVT!!!

Re: Singapore Ministers

Rod - I see little ground for comparison between the contribution between a politician and a national serviceman in time of peace.

And hence, little relevance in comparing the notion of equity.

Re: Singapore Ministers

Nevermind. You have your views, I have mine.

Re: Singapore Ministers

Hi Rod. How can u compare? One rich in air con room, draw million $$, exclude board of director fees, hv ridiculous pension plan for life, need I go on? And the NS men? Worthless life, a digit in the statistics...

Re: Singapore Ministers

eh fk la...u guys give rod my brother a break. he got it bad in army. sexually abused etc. plugged in all holes. even ears n nose....armpits also kenna. u will never understand the pain he took for this nation.

Re: Singapore Ministers

I spoke to a restaurant chef before. He lamented on his culinary skills, but complained about the need to toil in the kitchen for his work. He thought his skills is the pillar of the success of the restaurant he works in, and could not understand how the manager or the captain was paid more than him, chatting away casually with clients in the air-con dining hall. He was bitter about the "inequity."

Then I spoke to the manager/captain. He thought that the main client interface is most crucial to the restaurant's success, and the way the menus are designed and constructed. He thought that while the chef is important, the culinary delivery is only part of the total experience. If the customers wanted mere good food, they need not come to such a pricey restaurant. Many zhi-char shops can do just as well. And hence, he justified his place in the restaurant's hierarchy.

What a difference in perceptions !!!

Re: Singapore Ministers

the chef n manager all wrong. its the china prc waitresses who r the real stars. they work even late night shift entertaining the clients after supper hours.

u think I really go there to eat or talk to manager? knn...seow boh!?

what? the waitress is a PRC? CCB GOVT!!!

Re: Singapore Ministers

Totoseow is willing to pay more to the waitress after work, but that's not the point. Based on their perceived relative contributions to the restaurant, the chef and the manager/captain both think they should be paid more and that the other party should NOT be paid so much.

The irony is - the owner of the restaurant is paid the most. He works the least.

Is there equity at all?

Do note that I am not saying their pay is justified on an absolute level. But I have to agree that our leaders should be paid more than us, or the NS man based on the responsibilities and decision making process. How much more is a different topic altogether.

And whether it is fair relative to other politicians is also another topic altogether. Perhaps a walk in Bronx or Harlem or Johannesburg will make you understand what the pioneers with LKY have done to Singapore in the last 48 years, intangible to most strawberry generation.

Re: Singapore Ministers

The restaurant owner works the least but takes the most profit bcos he put in capital n takes the most risk . This is a private venture.

Sg Politicians wages shdnt not be pegged to private sector as the risk are different . In sg case, if your lose election, there's always a job at NTuc.

Re: Singapore Ministers

Pure communism where everyone is equal has shown it cannot work well as human by nature
is not altruistic
Capitalism on the other hand is not perfect (severance package for CEO and some football managers can be multi-millions)
What alternative do we have?

Re: Singapore Ministers

comparing walking safely in SG with a run down street in other countries is akin to saying my daughter can walk to a nearby mall without being stalked. When the question is, will there be a job for her 10 years down the road? Will she derive income for her to be buying goods in the mall ?

Compare how economy growth is being achieved . How that will be sustain for your generation n the next .

Already said, different topic. How they decide the remuneration structure and the cap is a debatable topic. But my stance is they should be paid much more than a corporate leader, for instance, more than a CEO of a company. That sets the floor, as a minimum.

Sorry, but I think no leadership in the world can address your concerns. In the US of A and some parts of Europe, they are already spending forward and broke AT THIS POINT.

Which country's leaders offer job security for the next generation?

And I do sense that the safety factor has already been taken for granted in your statement.

Re: Singapore Ministers

Econ growth thru pop growth is short term n unsustainable .

Sustainable growth was what drive singapore since the 60s and then the 70s when EDB was set up to drive value added industries such as shipbuilding/oil rigs n semi-con. We hv world beater such as keppel , chartered . Even SIA, Creative. So is EDB under the govn ?

Safely is basic needs . We vote in a govn to provide more than just that. If that , why not just let the police commissioner run for election ?

Re: Singapore Ministers

I respect LKY for many things. I dislike him for some. but I will remember how he broke the unions back when he fuck the pilots strike in 1980 n 2003.

in Europe...welfare and unions ruled and still do to a certain extent. plenty money bleeds in there 2 areas. we don't get that here largely due to the work hard mentality and zero tolerance for strikes. this is something we take for granted. so much so that we whine when trains get delayed for 30 mins. we never understand what it feels like to be stranded at airports for days...

I used to think this way for years. until recently, when I started to observe why hk/Tokyo even Bangkok has more labels than sing. its simply because they hv critical mass in the population. I m not sure if its sustainable in many context. ie. more people cud mean more strain on the system. more competition in many areas...even higher rents etc etc etc....but I am beginning to feel that a larger population has more plus than minuses.

this is naïve. for any country to move forward, there must be an evolution of sorts. history of any successful nation has always been about evolving. when this country was founded, it was based as a trading post. this country was beginning to gain traction from immigrants. when we gained independence, LKY recognized we had no resources, but we had a great chance to succeed in shipping.....to cut the story short...we moved into manufacturing...n then as we prospered, our labour cost could no longer be competitive. we moved into financial n then services....last I checked we have gone into bio sciences.

if we had lingered on past successes, we would have been buried 20 yrs back.

Safely is basic needs . We vote in a govn to provide more than just that. If that , why not just let the police commissioner run for election ?

k I get it. u sound very very young now. wasted my time.

In case u think im pro govt...im actually a pap hater. but I hope I hate for the right reasons.
