Singapore Ministers

Econ growth thru pop growth is short term n unsustainable. Sustainable growth was what drive singapore since the 60s and then the 70s when EDB was set up to drive value added industries such as shipbuilding/oil rigs n semi-con. We hv world beater such as keppel , chartered . Even SIA, Creative. So is EDB under the govn ?

My apology, but I could not really comprehend your perspective. Are you praising or criticising the policies? You and I might not agree to importing population for growth, but what is the solution against a greying population and a low replacement birth rate? I have no solution too, even if I dislike the rate of immigrants influx. I cannot imagine Singapore 20 years later with one strawberry generation graduate working against the backdrop of three or four retirees.

Take one step back and think from a micro level, if we were to exclude all foreigners from working and living here, who is gonna service your car? A local mechanic?

Safely is basic needs . We vote in a govn to provide more than just that. If that , why not just let the police commissioner run for election ?

Drive across the causeway and see if it is really that basic.

Re: Singapore Ministers

I actually saluted the govt when we were held "ransom" by Malaysia over the price of water and the govt of the day said Sg would rather drink its own pee then to be threatened....and we really introduced to the world during NDP that very year, that we had Newater and "go fcuk urself" middle finger to our friendly neighbours for using water to hold us ransom.

Of cos we have forgotten abt that and the SG of today will only scream "HAMMER TIME!! 2016!!" whatever tat means...

Re: Singapore Ministers

back to the point on critical mass. critical mass is everything. really. i c it a lot in hk. downside is same as here. polarization between hkgers n Chinese. but critical mass means more of everything. more competion more shops more vibrant...
thats more good than bad no?

if u r a singaporean n u feel marginalise....thats bcos u r a fking underperformer...that's my motivation.

ps. I will still hoot FT online of cos. cos its FREE

Actually I would love to hear how the Hammers propose to alleviate the issues we have discussed, with regards to low birth rates, importing of immigrants and foreign workers......

Re: Singapore Ministers

U don't hv to apologies. Understanding Economic growth is not for everyone, and u won't read it on Straits Times.

Greying pop, low birth rate according to who ? The straits times again?

We are beyond waitresses, mechanics , construction workers taking the jobs. This are low wage. It's the median income folks that is being squeezed. As there are other Indians n Pinoy willing to work for less.

We import workers in the low end n the high end where we need that low cost base n the high value add respectively .

Re: Singapore Ministers

Citizen is a basic needs that shd be provided for by the govn . Why continuously compare ourself to 3rd world countered ? Why not compare again developed nation where u can safely walk down the street n hv quality of living just as well ?

Re: Singapore Ministers

None of biz if u are pro pap or pro WP. I'm writing here for a pure pro Singaporean stand .

Re: Singapore Ministers

ok n I thought I was the only one going mad....trying to understand.

but please mr galaxy. I think the best thing for u to do it to tell us what would you have done? lets hear it.

One, I don't read the local papers.

Two, greying population needs no explanation. The baby boomers cycle will repeat itself. Low birth rates are concluded in actual birth numbers per 1000 population, and it has shown a downtrend for the last 10 years. Lest you still wanna debate on these numbers, to which we will have no end.

Singapore - Birth rate - Historical Data Graphs per Year

Three, you might understand the economic growth model better than me, but I have yet to read your revolutionary proposal.

Don't you realise, we have been doing that all these while?

High end - take the finance industry. You want the foreign banks here. What do you expect? All Singaporeans to head the departments? Hence you see lots of Japs in the 80s following their HQ here. Now you see ang mors from the likes of Merrill Lynch and Citigroup. Well-paid ang mors with perhaps housing perks and car allowances. Is there a solution to this? What would you have done differently?

Low end - the same happens to F&B industry. You walk into any restaurant, from Taste Paradise to Din Tai Fung, all foreign chefs and waiters/waitresses. Do note that the PRC merely replaced the Malaysians. Any difference for the past 20-30 years?

You argued that the median income folks are being squeezed. This is happening across the world. No one has any solution to this, especially against the world of capitalism and capital markets, unless we wanna regress back to a socialistic state of economy. Else, the rich will always get richer via risk and accessibilty to capital assets. I have discussed the same issue in the US of A on this "squeeze" on middle and lower income as well.

So I hv to prove what I hv done to be pro singapore.

Here. I do social photography.

with no offense to anyone here....

I'm hypothesizing here, but perhaps not too far from the truth....
the poor lady was probably kicked out of her own family home and has to fend for herself. do I feel sorry for her? yes... certainly. but does it mean its an opportunity to bash the government?

she probably worked all her life, put her kids through school and uni, then when she got old, got kicked out cos the 'son in law / daughter in law' felt she was an economic burden on the family?

else, she is a spinster / widow with no kids, no family to support her economically now.

just cause we see the occasional homeless old folks in the streets doesn't mean we get to bash the government.

if the government gave out 'free money' to the elder folks, paid for by the younger generation in high taxes, will you be keen to live in such a country?

Most people who lipped too much about a certain Swiss standard of living have no clue how similar we are:

(1) Switzerland is employing the immigrant-importing policy as well since 2004, or almost 1 in 5 in 2004
(2) Only 37% owns their own home - lowest in home ownership rates in Europe
(3) Housing and food are more expensive (71% and 45% more) than rest of Europe, 13% and 4% more expensive than Germany

We KPKB about expensive stuff?

1 CHF = 1.363 SGD

I carton of eggs (12) costs CHF 6.00

A 330 ml Coke/Pepsi costs CHF 4.00

Cost of Living in Switzerland. Prices in Switzerland.

A coke can be chf 4. But if the median income is $8000 vs a can coke costing $2 but median income is $3500 in sg. The dude in Swiss is still better off.
