E90 engine oil leak experience

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

well, I do my homework here in the forum with follow bros who posted similar problems. If you are certain it require replacement of particular spares, then purchase them here in sg and bring to Doc for replacement. Permas is not that far far lah, only 10 mins by EDL, Doc got no qualms if you bring your own parts, good luck. btw, how do you know yr solenoid need replacement?

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Hi Jenvid,

The real problem is not the mileage or how old or how new the car is, it's the OCI (oil change interval) and also how well the previous owner(s) took care of the maintenance.

From what i know, because of PML 25k km OCI, many engines got sludged up. Worse yet, can you imagine some new owners who hardly drive and stucked to the 25k OCI, it could be an oil change once in 2 years? I mean we all know fully synthetic must change at 10k right, or max 6 months, whichever comes first?

Now for the gearbox, BMW says it's a lifetime unit and ATF no need to flush/change. The lifetime defined by BMW is 100k miles, or 160k km which is what they expected the gearbox to "die". Well, die hard BMW enthusiasts or those who know better would stick to 40k ATF change, and their gearbox should be better than ours.

That said, i know for a fact the solenoids is a easy part to give way, it's made of plastic, yes plastic so sooner or later in this heat it will break down so you do need to replace it.

Francis workshop BTW is only 15min drive from JB causeway, in fact from my house in the East it's only 45km one way so i drove there. Got Francis to drop me at the JB immigration building, cross-over by foot, take the Bus 170 to SG side, then Bus 96x to Admiralty MRT back home. It was "my first time" going by foot + bus from JB haha.

Collecting the car just go by the reverse, take train to Admiralty, take Bus 96x to SG causeway building -> Bus 170 > reach JB Causeway terminal. Go down, buy taxi ticket tell the fellow you going to Permas Jaya, they charge flat rate RM 19.90 voila reach the workshop, collect car back, drive back to home in SG.

I gave detail driving instructions to one other bro here, not sure if it was accurate but if you need, just PM me and i can fwd you. Best yet, use a GPS. The new highway connects JB causeway, straight to the Permas Jaya JUSCO, which is just few lights from Francis workshop, so it's really easy to get there even for a JB newbie.

Hope the above helps

Okie....
A qn to all bros who brought their cars to Francis to do an overhaul, how did you guys sort out the logistics ? I mean Permas is quite a distance & an overhaul takes a couple of days...

Mine... the problem started after I replaced all the oil seals in SG, now my tranny also seems to need solenoid replacement.
Sianz.

Moral of story, buying a low mileage car doesnt mean anything. It is the engine hours that matters :(

Permas is not that far, but if you need to drop the car there for a few days then how ?

My tranny started giving me problems about 9mths ago(go over a pot hole or bumpy road at 80km/h like Upp Bt Timah near Bk Panjang & the yellow gear indicator comes on. Diagnostics shows problem with switching bet 4 & 5th gear.

Changed the ATF and the problem reduced very significantly. Recently it is coming back again.

I drove in manual all the way to Ko Samui, no such problem but then the engine oil consumption kicked in right after i replaced all the oil seals. Before that no oil consumption problem. So far consumed abt 1L/2000km.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Another way is to get another BMW-SG bro who is going there for light maintenance, can come back in his / her car after you drop off your car there.

Yeah just look for permas jaya jusco and it will be round the corner , its near a petronas stn.

Also take note that it's not a huge workshop , its a single unit like the one you find in ubi :)

Thanks for the info.

Well may be let me share my experience.

I bought a 06 E90 39k mileage 2 yrs back. It so happened that the car was the same day/mth/yr registered as my 2 colleagues that I dragged them to PML to buy the E90. Sheer coincidence !

Anyway, this colleague of mine took great TLC of his E90, regular OCI @10k etc but because he lives in Jurong West extension his mileage was close to 150k compared to mine 39k

About 7mths back he started coming to update me on the maintenance of his car, water pump changed, entire cooling system changed, fuel valve throttle changed, oil seals changed, etc then after all the maintenance parts changed, the biggy came. Oil consumption high.

Similar to mine, his came about after the oil seals were changed. He did a top overhaul and replaced all the piston liner/ring
2 to 3mths down the road, my car experienced all the same stuff... step by step... except my tranny gave up on me too..

Spoke to BVO, well quite true to their opinion, low mileage in SG context is not necessary a good thing if the car is an everyday car, extreme heat + low spd... the engine hours will clock in the maintenance schedule...

For my case, I managed to look through PML servicing records of the car before buying...was good but alas same experience.

Now my driver's door lock is getting cranky... sheesh...

I think is up to individual. For me lucky my overhaul takes 1 full day morning till very late night, got 2 ppl working on my car. I nv did a top overhaul as he told me mine not required. For overhaul gear box..... got to check with him what is to be replace and how long it takes before commit. Overhaul GB in JB can save u more half the cost in Spore, but some may not feel easy leaving car for a few days. End of the day is what u want, save money do at JB, peace of mind do in SPore, only 2 options.......
Cheers and good luck.
I am doing up my trans soonnn at JB~

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Actually short of posting the map, just google for "Permas Point Shopping Centre" his workshop is right beside it.

Don't go and think it's a shopping centre there, you can go there, shop and eat whilst waiting for your car to be serviced.

The shopping centre is defunct, but there's two rows of eateries, coffee-shop, and also don't tell Francis i go to one of the salon there, on the new side of his workshop. There's one MY hairdresser quite chio hahaha.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Hi bro,

If it's any comfort to you, you are not the only one experiencing all these issues on the E90. We all do.

First come the oil problems, then the water ones, then the engine, gearbox, then small stuff like door locks etc.

Good thing is all these problems can be solved by a competent mechanic/workshop, get the right parts changed, car feels new again. Just remember to maintain proper OCI. The drive = priceless! hehe

Once again thanks to canuck78, I have gotten hold of Francis contact. Seems like he is actually quite well known for taking care of the E46s in Msia.

For my case, it sucks cuz with the maintenance bill stacking up, I could have gotten a 07 or 08 E90 where the OCI is set to 12.5k & the GB was updated. And the depreciation adds up esp in this blood sucking country. Every dollar counts to car ownership....

Oh well...

Drive - U should check out a 325 E93 with the roof down, possibly the only BMW with an almost perfect 50/50 wt balance AFAIK. Push it thru the B roads and the grin on your face will reach your ears ! haha...

And now... off to car maintenance... BTW with the SGD appreciation against RM, I believe cost of spares in Msia should be pretty comparable to SG.
Your views ?

Thanks guys ! You guys are great !

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Hi Jenvid,

Cost of parts in MY is taxed at 30%, so if you know what to change, better buy it in Singapore and Francis would be happy to replace/fix it for you and charge labour only.

If you do not know what to change, he can supply OEM/original BMW parts which cost 30% more + labour, overall still cheaper by quite a fair chunk depending small or big job you are doing there.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Bros,
Just curious, how bros here encountering the engine oil consumption is an IL6 rather than the 4 Potter...

I recall someone told me that that the IL6 being a bigger engine has more metal & surface area to dissipate heat and thus less of such issue.

Interestingly I used to have an IL6 which consumes abt 1l of oil every 11k and after passing the 80k mark, no more oil consumption n the engine actually runs smoother....

Thanks.

I did my valve body change with him 1-2 months ago . I bought the parts from SG and ask him to installed it . Total Cost 2.6k . Is that considered GB overhaul ? Or overhaul includes changing something else ?

Yup! That was what I did too! But I only had to pay RM15 to get from immigration to the workshop! Hahah! Quite simple lah.... It's more of the unknown that's scary compared to the actual doing it.... =)

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

I think overhaul includes cleaning out the entire tranny to look like "almost new" condition. That may include replacing other parts as well (I'm not sure).... but the valves and solenoids are the main stuff that require replacement... I think the rest are all mechanical gears - they don't quite spoil unless there's some super serious damage to the transmission which result in seizure and secondary damage to the mechanical gears.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Gearbox overhaul usually refers to the valvebody and/or solenoid as bro lkm pointed out, generally will include also some cleaning and ATF renewal.
