Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

I'm wondering whether to buy a E90... any gurus can advise is engine oil leaking frequent?

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

The answers are very obvious im this thread, iebmw 3 series thread, under oil consumption / engine oil leaks etc

This must be the most heavily discussed thread in 3-series

Most if not all 320i using IL-4 cyl engine will have engine oil leaks between the 4-5 yo mark, due to engine seals type and wear and tear in our climate

Not sure about 323/325i which is 6 cyl, but hearsay less prone! If you buy bmw, prepare to pay lots more for servicing and maintenance esp a used one. The alternative is to buy a brand new or one still with warranty from PML

Seem all Beamers have leaking problems and high rate for wear and tear. I sort of begin to dislike having to keep up with all these hassle and most likely will revert to Jap model for the next change. Perhap the IS 250 will fair better.

Same sentiment.....

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Last nite my car ask me to top up engine oil but this morning resume normal.
So should i top up or not? Could it be the oil sensor?

My mechanic told me the only way to verify is to drain the oil out to check whether the amount of oil still there, is that true?

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

My 06 E90 is having a bad leak. Top up almost 1 liter every 2 weeks. Went to local workshop but can't fixed the leak completely.

Thanks to lkm, who share the JB workshop.

Its a nice little shop with very helpful boss the staffs, very detail check and reasonable pricing.

Changed 5 seals and 2 pipe on the engine. Now left with gearbox and flywheel which also detected with oil leaking

Could be the oil sensor. I had mine replaced around the 5-yr mark...

Been there, done that... you are in good hands as they are a competent workshop and value for money.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

I believe when the gasket is replaced but where the gasket would sit is not properly cleaned,it will result in problems.

Some sludge at the oil cap is normal as the bimmer engine runs pretty hot, and with condensation, this is the normal place for some sludge to gather. But purely from the oil cap, even if you shine a light inside, most of the view is blocked so you can't really see whether the valvetrain / cylinder head is sludged up.

I can live with some levels of light sludge in the engine, but not the heavy levels I had in mine earlier. Whilst my was not the worse i saw, which already bothered me for quite some time, it's the fear that I know block oil passages can result in low oil pressure and worse case, for the engine to seize (aka car "heart attack").

The only effective way to tell whether your engine is sludged up or not, is either to open the engine valve cover, or drop the oil pan below.

Given you have changed your valve cover gasket 8 months ago, i don't think you need to replace it again as this gasket should last at least a couple of years. Also, do you have any oil leaks or burning oil, otherwise no need to waste money replacing all these parts.

Best is get your mechanic to take a look, gotta fix the right spot right? :)
