Hello TN7.

I would like an updated disc, but coincidentally, they updated my software trying to get the gearbox issue sorted and found a copy disc in my dvd drive.

They said that it could affect the software?

Sounds like bullsh**.

I am not a happy camper - going down tomorrow morning to collect and bang table.

Hi SB,

Was at R2D yesterday when a lady driving the pre LCi 523 drove in and told him about her problem (like your car)), and his view was also to change the ATF every 40k km or so.

And regarding your problem of car lurching forward, you might want to go speak to him about it as he seems to have a solution for you.
Check out R2D, one of our forummer here.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Firstly - thankyou to everyone who helped to respond on this issue. I was a bit shell shocked when I heard the news. I left the car with them for a week to do the software update and they called me in Korea with the bad news.

I guess my reaction over the phone had the deired effect because when I went in this morning to collect my car following the failed software rectification, the SE told me BMW engineers recommended changing the megatronic unit, which is part of the transmission as this would solve the problem. BMW was willing to share part of the cost and total bill will be around $2.2k with a 2 year warranty.

When I asked about ATF being changed, the SE said 50k kms was a good time, but they were ready to keep my old ATF if I wanted. Changing the ATF would be another $600 odd.

So I booked in for the work at the begining of Feb.

Coincidentally, after the software update, the level of the problem is not as great as it was before, in fact it is almost unoticeable - but it is still there. The other good news is the software update has given me a better menu and cooler graphics / colours.

So, any advice on the megatronic change? Is this about as good a deal as I should expect? More importantly, will it fix the problem?

Ok i just checked my car out from non-pml workshop with the same issue this evenung. They said to solve the problem, auto transmission valve body need to be replaced. Parts cost $2k+ (cannot remember higher or lower end ) exclude labour. That should fix

Hey Bro, Please let us know who this mechanic guy you spoke to about the valve body. I am looking for valve body as well for my E36 though.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

my E36 155k-255k km... E46 0-99k km... no ATF change... guess the 4 cylinders dont get the damage...

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Hey SB,

Was speaking to a mechanic about your problem. He said that the gearbox can be rebuilt for not much more then $5k at most but he needs to see it first. PM me if you want his contact.

Also, the change of the ATF does not cost $600!

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

My pre-LCI E60 reaching 60,000km mileage. Spoke to a few workshop, quoted $250 by KATC, transmission specialist, btw I bought their extended warranty last year. The workshop in Bukit Batok quoted $300, not requiring oil pan filter change. Some in Sin Ming quoted $600 to $700 with oil pan filter change. Anyone done before can recommend is it necessary to change the transmission filter? Also what brand of oil to use?

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

My transmission oil was changed last week. 1litre = $52 and it requires 7.5 L. Apparently the brand of oil is BMW itself.
As for the filter, it is embedded with the pan which I didnt change.
Change of ATF doesnt solve the car lurching forward at all. So dont waste the money.

Brummie, I think the mechantronics is the part that needs to be replaced. I believe thats the part which my workshop was trying to articulate to me 'valve body'. I saw the physical part. You can check realoem.com to see the diagram. They told me gurantee to fix the problem.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Hi SB,

Software upgrade? Hmmm.... that sounds like fun.... maybe take a look at yours first to see whether worth it to upgrade. How much did they charge you?

Also, I agree with you about the GPS affecting everything else....

Hope your car is well now.....

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Bro,
Knowing 1 of our local w'shop might able to solve your problem. PM sent.

Cheers

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

BMW have changed the mechatronic unit (I thought the SE was telling me "megatronic") which was recommended by BMW engineers. PML wanted me to change the whole frickin gearbox, but shouting down the line got me from S$10k down to a more reasonable figure, with 2 year warranty.

I left the car with PML this week (overseas again) and they have sent a message saying job completed and problem fixed.

I will update you guys when I get the car back over the weekend. They put the old ATF back because PML would not budge on the $600 quote - fixed price, which was around $52 per litre, 7 to 8 litres, plus labour.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

sounds like a con job where all cars get the same gearbox problem after standard warranty expires?

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Shit my E90 with 39k mileage done exhibit the same problem and has make an appointment with PML tommorrow but my warranty has expired....will scream down their throat if asked to pay...

somehow ZF gearbox is not reliable..my other Camry Thai make gearbox has no such issue after 40k done and I just solf off my Suzuki Swift with 64k done with no oil ATF oil change with perfect shifting gearbox.

Premium car doesnt gurantee premium quality.....Next ride will go for Lexus....dont think will ever encounter transmission problem with so low mileage...

I think its Detroit master plan to plant a trojan horse to stop Toyota of claiming US market...CTS is a true blue US company....their max loss only US1 million Product Insurance......Toyota stand to loose 21B.....

Audi/Volkswagen group will be the next market leader
