singapore toyota never recall cars? thought it was world wide. or is it just american arm?

nope..just service my camry 2 days ago no recall but was told to send car promptly every six month....my service was 10 months ago....

I used to have a saab 95 the valve body need to be changed after 120k and thought its bad...now my useless E90 gearbox cannot last 39k....thinks for BMW they make you so tied up with gearbox change until you get rid of your car and wont notice pedal stick problem if you ever encounter one..

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

not sure if the dent in reputation will result in their sales being affected. if so they might wanna consider lowering their prices. might as well, they have bee charging overpriced cars for the longest time. cant phatom what so special about their cars as suppose to other japanese makes. or maybe its just borneo motors.

Hello TN7.

I would like an updated disc, but coincidentally, they updated my software trying to get the gearbox issue sorted and found a copy disc in my dvd drive.

They said that it could affect the software?

Sounds like bullsh**.

I am not a happy camper - going down tomorrow morning to collect and bang table.

Complete bullsh**.

typical AD workshop response.
To throw some smoke.
Feed you a Red Herring.
So you're momentarily distracted from the real issue.

Heck why not blame you in the process.
What a bunch of dickwads.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Just to update..

PML say after doing all the re-programming (some firmware update) my problem of gearbox lurching forward during slowing down is resolved. Too good to believe until I go test my ride later and they will charge me $240 for that.

Not sure if they did change the ATF oil but according to the SA no but just check oil level.

funny...why must I pay for firmware update that is needed to resolve my 39000km gear-box problem??? It should be their design or premature failure.....

Anyway if it really solve my problem, I am happy already and will go outside to change the ATF oil soon to prevent having to fork out 4-5k for the mechantronic (valve body) replacement.

:whatthe:

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Having the same problem with my E60. V disappointed. Can suddenly feel a "thud" and lurch forward just before the car stops. Went to PML, ended up changing front wheel control arm bush, re-seal gearbox, change new ATF for about $1200. After I got back the car, it felt a lot better, but after 2-3 days the problem is back again *sigh*
Wonder if i should go back to PML to bang table, but if they suggest to change the mechatronic (and make me pay for it since warranty over) and insist there is nothing they can do, I'll be stuck with paying more ?

Anyway, this problem only happens in D-mode. Doesn't happen in DS or M mode. Think its because in D mode, the car downshifts to 1st gear just before stopping whereas M/DS auto downshift to 2nd gear.
Guess a workaround is not to use the D mode, but will be really inconvenient to some.

I find the same problem with the 7 series (E65).

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

I think they never update the transmission software. I heard alot of E90 got this fix after their Transmission software is updated. Should be the same though different model. My 2 cents.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

went down to PML today to "bang table"

Showed them the bulletin below.....ran a check and told me the software is same version, they will investigate with technical team meanwhile :(
It's a common problem with ZF gearboxes, even jaguars with this geargox having the same problem.

BMW TSB - SIB240305 bulletin:

SUBJECT
Harsh 2-1 Downshift

MODEL
E60 (545i); E63/64 645(Ci/Cic) with 6HP26 up to 04/05

SITUATION
Customer may complain of the following:

An excessively harsh 2-1 downshift when decelerating to a stop, or

Transmission "bangs" into gear when accelerating from a full or a "rolling" stop
(vehicle did not come to a complete stop).

CAUSE
EGS software.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram/recode complete vehicle using SSS
with CIP on-line update 17.01, or higher.

Important:
Transmission temperature must remain below 50 deg C and trans shifter must be
placed in P position prior to the start of CIP programming.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

It seems that for my case after re-programming the problem is solved....but shit PML dent my door and paint came off and just touch up for me...

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

so its really the software issue for the gearbox? dents bmw owners confidence in the cars...hope they can get them all fixed wo us forking out cash for what is supposed to be working

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Was informed that my software version already latest... still no go :(
Basically, PML will do the following troubleshooting (provided they found other parts like control arm bush in good condition):

1. Check whether ATF is at correct level, no leaking.
2. Replace ATF. If still doesn't work, go to #3.
3. Software reprogramming. If still doesn't work,
4. Replace mechatronics / keep troubleshooting until u bth and change gearbox.

For my case, #1, and #2 was done, plus replace control arm bush. Problem not solved.
Asked about #3, say will check with technical team and get back to me. Never call back, i had to bombard SA with phonecalls every 15 mins (kept auto transferred to voice mail) for 4 hours before he finally called back. Think they logged your number everytime a call was received? ;p
Informed me software ver already latest, say have send the car in to slowly troubleshoot. Too sick of it, loss of usage, costs will escalate while troubleshooting (change this and that blah blah blah). Might as well just go to #4. Meanwhile think i'll just use the M-mode until the gearbox really die off and replace at a later time.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Was in Vito van Taxi yesterday. Talked to driver who said van on original auto gearbox mileage done is 530k!! And I have heard similar stories before. So to me failures before 200k is unacceptable, as long as box suffered no abuse. Regular oil change vital, especially with the 'sealed for life' boxes.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

I have been following this mail thread to understand how a 4 yr old GB can fail.
And as some says, there are 2 schools of thought.
But I'm on the side that supports regular flushing of GB regardless of what the manufacturer says.

Interval of flushing is every 20k if majority of time spent on road is urban driving. i.e. regular start stop. Even a dual clutch GB of an R35 needs to flush every 8 to 10k. And cost every flush is 1k. So a regular flush of GB not only give you a smoother ride, and will also provide an extended life span.

Just my practise in maintaining a car in good working condition less any mod.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Asure 7. Have you Sent a complaint directly to BMW Asia about this issue? My 523 LCI was reprogrammed a the ger shit stick mechanism replaced after some issues not the same as yours. ZF supplies tranmissions to BMW and also to MB, I do not think it is a case of poor design. I cannot say if a software fault will lead to operational issues, which cannot be fixed at a later time, if not rectified immediately.

Write to BMW Asia describing clearly the issue and PML's response you will hear from them.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

Got my car back after replacing the mechatronic unit (with the original ATF) and the problem has been solved.

Push PML to get the best price as this is a common problem that really should not be happening.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

SBrummie,

Can share with me whats the damage? This jerk to stop is driving me nuts. So much so that i shift to neutral everytime I stop now.

Thanks

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

I paid almost $1,500 for the mechatronic replacement including labour and GST. You need to drive a hard bargain. I don't see why I have to pay silly money (remember they quoted me around $10k for a new gearbox) to fix a problem caused by BMW. I am not particularly pleased at paying $1,500 but it could have been a lot worse.

I am now looking around at alternative rides. Volvo XC60 (or possibly XC90), V70, Audi Q5 etc.

Re: Gearbox Kaput after 4 years?

wah....after reading so much of BMW problem and PML type of servicing.......this car can drive meh? AD don't know what they are doing and GB kaput just like that....think is high time to change my BM before it break down pcs by pcs, pui..shame on you PML and BMW.

My pre-LCI E60 reaching 60,000km mileage. Spoke to a few workshop, quoted $250 by KATC, transmission specialist, btw I bought their extended warranty last year. The workshop in Bukit Batok quoted $300, not requiring oil pan filter change. Some in Sin Ming quoted $600 to $700 with oil pan filter change. Anyone done before can recommend is it necessary to change the transmission filter? Also what brand of oil to use?
I just checked ( with BVO ) that it needs about some 9 litres of ATF for my e90, so will cost about some SGD500-600 ( include oil filter pan change ). This price seems about the same as PML right ?

Can someone help advise at 40,000km mileage, do I need to change the oil filter pan yet? or I just change the ATF only will do. Thanks

regards,
WL
