Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Hi guys,

Before you decide to replace either the solenoid or the valve body, i think it's better to get the proper diagnosis which is the part that needs to be replaced, or both? Dr Rod from R2D told me before there's a numeric value in autologic that he can read, which tells before opening up the auto-tranny which part is worn and need replacement. Hence, better get a correct diagnosis before throwing money at the problem.

I would ask any workshop, why it's the solenoid and not the valve body, or vice versa - and walk away if they can't give you a satisfactory diagnosis/explaination. The common line that they have done many of these, all e90 has this problem etc doesn't cut with me.

Hi Pengful,
Thank you for starting this thread. It really helps...
I am thinking of changing to a New Mechantronic unit to solve the jerk problem.. Are both the soleniod and the valve body in the Mechantronic unit? Or are they totally separated from the Mechantronic unit?

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Hi Guys,
I've always wanted to try out a Bimmer and finally bought 2nd hand one yesterday (2006 320i). But as luck would have it, 6 hours into enjoying the drive, I got the dreaded fault indicator showing a problem with the transmission.
My dilemma is this:
Should I go back to the workshop recommended by the 2nd hand car dealer from whom I bought the car or should I go with the recommendation of my fellow users. I'm leaning towards using the workshop that you guys recommend. But I'm afraid of the cost that I would incur.
I really need you guys to put things into perspective and advise me what I should do.
Thanks guys.

Agree... I think it is wise to get a 2nd opinion...

Many moons ago, I had a 96 Laser TX3 that had ATF leaking... Went to 2 of these transmission specialists and both said to overhaul at about $4-5k because of the age of my car. They are quick to jump into the "overhaul your transmission" solution since they are known for that and I'm pretty sure they are good at it. In the end, I went to another "non-specialist" workshop and paid $100+ to change a few seals. Problem solved.

Even though we know this was common problem for E90 with 5-6 yrs age, since you had just collect the car yesterday. I will go back to the dealer to bang table and ask for an explaination, let see what the 'Lemon Law' can do on this..

Thanks guys. It's clear to me that I should go back to the 2nd car dealer's workshop. If they can solve the issue, then great. If not, I'll try to return the "lemon".
Thanks for clearing things up for me.

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

There are a few workshops out there that can do a top flushing of the control unit and to re-program the valves. Try them.

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Honestly, I wouldn't expect the dealer to repair it.

Here's why: the previous owner probably didnt want to spend few k fixing it, so he/she traded it in. The 2nd hand dealer got it, and he ain't gonna fix it in case he got stuck with it. So now you bought it, he's gotten rid of it. It's a musical chair.

Now you got it and hours into driving it, the dreaded "red rambutan of death"! Go back and get them to cut the price of the car, or use the workshop of your choice. Why? It's conflict of interest! Would you believe you if they tell you they fixed the auto trans after a few days, I wouldn't. I rather get some money back and pay my own shop to fix it, peace of mind!

If not, return it and look for another e90! There are plenty in the market to choose from.

hi bro, congrats on your new ride,i faced the same problem like you when i collected my 2006 320i as well, engine oil leaking, coolant leaking and gearbox having the stop and jerk issue.went back to the dealer ask me go their workshop to rectify.try 1week ,running here and there like a mad dog .end of day decide to go BVO to rectify my problems and change some wear and tear parts, spent close to 4k.in the end negotiate with my car dealer, they refund me 1k .better then nothing.they will tell you,car got problem, bring to their workshop because they wanna honour their warranty on engine and gearbox.its up to you whether you have the time or not asking you to leave yr car there for 4 or 5 days.i dun trust the dealer workshop, that y i do the repair myself.at least i know wat is wrong with my car.now i pray hard hope my bimmer dun fall sick.i enjoy my ride.juz my experience and 2 cents

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Hi bros. thanks for sharing your experience. After a short time with the car, I really love it (despite the problem). I guess what they say is true....
"Once you've gone black, you won't go back". I can't see myself not driving this car. I hope I can find a solution with the dealer.

hi guys,me and zinckool are newbies, athough i did up my car alady, bro zinckool flywheel leaking problem is being rectified by his car dealer.after reading so many good reviews of R2D, i advise him why not u try other bmw specialist to do up his wear and tear issues like changing of suspension, radiator etc etc.we called r2d twice but could not get them.waited for 2 days, called again, finally a lady picked up the phone.we requested whether can they check zinckool car to see wat r the things to replace or repair but she say so sorry ,we r very busy,we have only 2 hoists.we r free only next week.in the end,he end up going to another recommended specialist who checked his car and he did all the replacement there. we know r2d is good and we hope to try his service in the near future.

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

All the sponsors workshop here like J4C, BOSS, BVO, R2D, Munich Auto all very good, just that they provide "different level of service" and different price etc.

There are couple other workshop in Ubi, Sin Ming, or even JB that is not sponsor workshop that's many bro used here so feel free to try out and find one or two suitable workshop to service your bimmer.

Rest assured your bimmer will need to have a good car doc, to keep her in good running condition.

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Hi bros i'm curious as to whether this problem is also common for the E92/93s?

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Mine car also have the rattle sound at the centre console. Please advise if any members have the same problem and how to resolve this issue.
Tks

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Believe so for any make, even Jap ride if the auto transmission is not serviced at the correct interval e.g. ATF flush and replaced at every 40-60k

Re: Overhaul Transmission - Sep 2006 E90 320 PFL

Possibly something loose or not fixed perfect, gotta take out and eliminate one by one.

Or it could be frictional noise (caused by parts to parts abrasion), this one can go auto-bac buy the dash anti-friction spray.

My cup tray also rattles when i used it or have it extended out (so i keep it in all the time, in which case it's quiet).

Worse case, i think you can check with Eng Soon how much it cost to change that particular part, it's just a plastic part so it should not be too ex.
