"It has long bothered me that we seem to operate on a model of wanting the foreign workforce for their labour and economic value, yet wishing they would disappear at all other times. We shunt them off to distant dormitories and do everything possible to signal that they are unwelcome in our city and suburban centres. We also want them for their labour, but begrudge them a living wage, decent healthcare and fair treatment. This is not only very short-sighted, it is remarkably naive to think it will never boomerang on us."

I have heard the best grievances on FT-confused-with-FW policies from my soccer team mate.
He complained about it like an average whining Singaporean while we are dining in Ding Tai Fung (filled with PRC employees, from waitresses to chefs), besides his Filipino maid. Best of it, he runs a contractor firm with truckloads of Indian/Bangla workers working for him !!!
Perfect irony.

Irresponsible reporting you may say, but I am not so sure if SUN TV is the ONLY source which fabricate news, if you know what I mean....

Hokay, I got my answer. Hearsay from the workers' grapevine, many of the workers were already high-strung due to alleged "oppression" by their employers (wages, conditions etc). Plus many were drunk. The accident was just an emotional trigger that sparked off the events that unfolded after that. Dunno how true it is, hearsay only. But then it makes sense of my question above.

Actually from what i gathered on the ground thru some witnesses is that while there was a core group that created the damage, there were groups of FW who where shield the local/women/kids in the area to safety. That includes helping shopkeepers. I am also told some actually helped the shop owners to clear up in the aftermath. So not all the FW in the area were involved in the riot some are just bystanders. That would prob account for the low numbers of arrest made.

FTs or FWs, rich or poor foreigners regardless... they can be all aggressive and violent.

Think they are better than locals? Pent-up frustrations? Psychopath? Or just simply fail to integrate into a law and order society like ours? Why are these FTs/FWs always in the limelight of serious crimes? I can't think of a better explanation than we had invited these problems to our own backyard through loose and unchecked immigration policies.
