Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

a friend with a civic sent me this. taken from SHC forum. hope they dun affect bmws.
not flaming...as i changed to volker myself too. just information to share.

"Hey bros,

something to share with you all out there about volker iridium plugs. I
got a set from the authorised distributor all the way in Kranji Loop for
my ride 2 months ago. When I bought them, the first impression I got was
that these plugs were finished poorly as the ground electrodes on all 4
didn't look uniform. Anyway, I thought I shouldn't let that bother me.
So, I installed them (carefully torqued with my torque wrench) and drove
around for about 2000km. Recently, my idling seemed quite erratic and so
today, I decided to take them out for an inspection to see how they were
doing.

Among other things, I used my multimeter to measure the resistance of
the plugs, from tip to nut. All 4 plugs registered way LESS than 5k ohm!
These plugs supposedly have got a 5k ohm resistor in them. One gave a
reading of 2k ohm while the other 3 measured 2.2~2.6k ohm. Obviously the
resistors in the volker plugs failed.

My used set of denso iridium IK20s all measured 5.1~5.5k ohm. Says a lot
about the quality of volker iridium plugs. So much about being able to
last 160,000km!

It's back to denso iridium for me..... this time VK20. And lo and
behold, the engine became smoother after that. "

Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

It's backed up by warranty so let's see what happens down the road....

Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

Totoseow,

Did your civic fren go back to sort out or ask for replacement?

Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

Yes Bro.

The initial batch of plugs did have some resistance issues that the writer refers to. The resistance of the plugs are just there to limit the spark intensity during ionisation. If the resistance is lower, the ionisation current is higher (stronger spark). (Think of it this way: what is the resistance of the air gap between the points? Definitely much much higher than 5kohms) Since 4mths ago, Volker has been using a different supplier for the carbon powder used for making the resistor. It is through feedback like this that the product gets refined.

Japanese cars typically run smaller coils and therefore have a lower output compared to the continental cars. The BMs, MBs, VWs, Audis and such......can run plugs with no resistance if need be. The only issue with this is that is that you generate ignition whine in some ...i love hello kitty and spongebob squarepants! ......i love hello kitty and spongebob squarepants! ... radios. FCC regulates this problem.

If you play with the plugs on japanese cars, a simple fact surfaces. They do not like smaller gaps. Once the gap narrows, ionisation voltages lower and spark current increases and creating misfires and such. Fortunately ND plugs use a normal steel ground electrode that slowly erodes and this increases the gap and ionisation voltage thus the performance degrades slowly and does not cause misfires. That is why we re-gapped Arsenal62's plugs to 1.1mm while BMs run 0.8mm. The japanese cars that commonly face this problem are Nissans and Mitsubishis.

Bro totoseow, since the writer bought the plugs from Kranji (UM2) he is most welcome to return to the workshop for a free replacement. No workmanship cost, no shipping nothing to pay. They are under warranty for 1 yr. Please forward to him this reply. Thanks

Cheers

Rodney

Bro, if changing to a new set still does not solve the problem, of course money will be returned.

This brings up the issue of durability testing, which I neglected to mention before. Manufacturers have the minds, money, manpower, machinery, time, to test components for hundreds of thousands of miles, for however harsh an application they anticipate. Small aftermarket companies almost always do not have these abilities.

For all things close to stock application and stock power, no one does it better or more holistically than the manufacturers. Modern cars have reached a point where the system as a whole is so well matched and controlled that modifying beyond the smallest and poorest gain-per-dollar type mods, is increasingly becoming an all-or-nothing option.

Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

Hello totoseow

I have sold Volker Plugs for a year now and yes there are some issues with the plugs on Japanese cars. Most of my customers have not had problems with their cars. There are a few cars that face jerking or misfiring issues and if after 1 replacement it does not solve the problem, i refund their money back.

As pointed out by Rodney, I have been fortunate enough to have customers return to me with the problem as i can remove the plugs and send them back to Volker for analysis. It is through this feedback channel that Volker has been able to single out the carbon resistor that has been causing issues. They have changed their manufacturing processes and have completed a 8000hr engine test on the new resistors. They now do not fail.

If the product does not deliver, i do not sell it. I stand by my gurantee and welcome those drivers that face problems with Volker Plugs who have bought from me to come back for a replacement.

Regards
CP

Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

Ah yes...such a guarantee gives peace of mind. Sometimes lack of product knowledge in a vendor is also very irritating. Reflects poor effort to learn about their product on the part of the vendor.

Re: Volker Racing Spark Plugs

Shaun.

You are forgetting that car manufacturers also work on a tight budget and that every cent saved equates to thousands of dollars at the end of the year. Small specialists manufacturers have the ability to delve indepth into specific areas and come up with innovative solutions.

I can agree with your last statement but only to a certain extent. The car system on the whole is optimised for everyone everywhere. There are areas that can be further optimised to suit the environment.
