The whole issue of overcrowding IMHO, is due to Ministry A not talking to Ministry B... Bring them in, we need them. But oops, I forgot to tell the guys looking after transportation and housing to prepare for more and that takes time. Or maybe they told them, but no one listened or thought, as usual, they can handle the problem themselves.

Hey, I just read about this in the papers on why Sony failed...it's called the Silo Structure.

I highly doubt LLL can/will do much for PE since the infrastructure there is already good..

But it's orh bee good to the government coz they just don't listen. If 2016 they still talk about raising population to 7-8M, they will lose more GRCs. Confirmed

I think they do listen (well, they have to after GE11 and especially PE13)... but I think they listened to the wrong people or didn't get the whole picture. They are not dumb (I hope), so why don't they get it?

Initially I thought the top guys lost the ground, but gradually, through other experiences, I realised it is their foot soldiers or ground generals who either lost touch or don't dare to tell them the bad news. The director or deputy director levels have no clue because they are probably too well-fed.

Everybody has a car... don't they? No? Really? Blimey...

But, but... Ah Kong himself also said something along the lines of "repent and regret" last GE.... Who was he listening to ah?

Re: Polling day commences for 31,600 voters in Punggol East...........

The People's Action Party's (PAP) candidate in the Punggol East by-election, Dr Koh Poh Koon, said it is important to have a good strong team and to continue to be sincere with residents.

He cited these as the key takeaways from his by-election bid.

Dr Koh, who spoke to reporters before setting off to thank residents on Sunday morning, said his vote share of 43.7 per cent "wasn't too bad".

He said he is proud to have done his best.

Asked if he will run in the next General Election, Dr Koh said he will need to think deeper about this.

He said he will be analysing the results and will wait for the prime minister's decision on where he can contribute in.

In Saturday's by-election, the Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian won the seat, garnering 54.5 per cent of valid votes.

On giving an initial assessment on why PAP lost, PM Lee said "In a by-election, the governing party candidate always has a tougher fight. Voters see it as choosing an MP, not choosing a government, and opposition parties encourage them to do so." - Lee Hsien Loong.

Hmmmm, what is LHL thinking? And why he is dismissing a whole lot of other factors plus insulting the intelligence of voters. Goodness, he better improve or GE16 would be ugly :(

From this article in Yahoo!News, am sure PAP will lose more ground if MIW continue with their "current method" of managing SG.

URL to article - We wanted change: Punggol East residents - Yahoo! News Singapore

Cut+Paste some feedbacks from the ground:

Engineer Mani, 52, said although he had hoped the PAP would win, he was disappointed how "it all boils down to profits". "That is the setback for them. Everything they want to do, they want to see profit. You take the MRT, they want to see profits, you can take transport, they want to see the profits, and it's the same with health care. They should be more human, they are not treating the people right," he said.

"Mr Lee, PAP has done a good job in many areas. You can't please everyone. But please stop dangling carrot or threatening the people. Show that you really care for the people regardless which team has won. Give the opposition sufficient support so that we all move together as one," she said.

"We are very happy about it, in fact this victory is what we expected. A lot of people are not happy with the standard of living right now, everything is so costly. We expect her and WP to speak for us in Parliament," she said.

Re: Polling day commences for 31,600 voters in Punggol East...........

The elite concept has to make way for grassroots people. People who were poor before to represent them, then policy making will not be broad stroke rather cater to needs of different groups in the society. This mentality is non existence with the elite. Same we need good mix of different background representatives to debate and views to seriously consider for the better of all Singaporeans.

One of the stumbling block of elite mentality is not wanting to share with non elites. It is their nature as they feel it is their entitlement and the non elites need them.

I felt sorry for Halimah Yacob. She from humble background and fighting for welfare, setting good examples. Now she is the Speaker of Parliament, who can no longer voice the people's problems in parliament.

Re: Polling day commences for 31,600 voters in Punggol East...........

If only there were to be a national referendum on the population, I would vote for a maximum of 5 million inclusive of maximum 1 million foreigners. A few weekends ago, I took the MRT and 90% were foreigners. Yesterday, I drove and the roads are jampacked and made worse with foreign-registered vehicles driving into Singapore toll-free during the weekend. When I walked through Orchard Road in early January, the street was filled with foreigners and tobacco smoke. Worse is yet to come if we do not arrest the tide. How to like the people on top under such trying circumstances?

We were very happy and PAP fearing at 2.5M

Re: Polling day commences for 31,600 voters in Punggol East...........

Probably in short, it is cheap, cost effective and faster results to increase Singapore population by migrants, rather than investing in Singaporeans.

For example, just issue a paper and you can get a foreign doctor working in gov hospital. His/her home country has already invested in that doctor, compare to nurturing a home grown NUS doctor with high subsidies and worse he/she may migrate later. Bear in mind it is cheaper to employ foreign doctor for our ageing population. And local doctor unable to ask for higher salary too.

Welcome to Singapore Incorporated.

Welcome to Singapore Incorporated.

Why garmen need to set a target year to hit 7M population when they know very well that the only way to achieve that is to increase migrants? They have enough politicians, economist, statistician, analyst of top grade to know this.

Why not implement solid policies during Budget 2013 that will ensure increase in birth rates amongst Singaporeans like:
1) make sure all married couples who have kids or who intend to have kids within 1 yr to automatically qualify for purchase of hdb flats immediately without balloting
2) all low income families with kids get up to 80-100% subsidy for child care centers
3) abolish Coe and set limit on car sales monthly. With or without Coe, they are still controlling new car population. Allow families with kids to have first option on application basis.
4) special subsidy programs to purchase hdb for families with kids.

By allowing real income of young Singaporeans to increase surely improves their psychological barrier to make babies!
